    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

I really loved how the value of healing surge was 25% of the character health and that the number of surges varied depending on roles, it reinforced the different durability of each class, more than just the number of HP. For exemple, in my current campaign where the characters are level 4...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

As has been shown multiple times in this thread, 4e is very clear that damage is not just physical damage, but also stamina, will, lick, etc. 4e also made it very clear that a miss is not necessarily a total miss but might still brings different effects like a scratch, a little burn or...

Let's take the fighter At-Will power level 1 'Reaping Strike' for exemple. 4e version: Reaping Strike 'You punctuate your scything attacks with wicked jabs and small cutting blows that slip through your enemy's defenses.' Attack: Strength VS AC Hit: 1(W)+Strength modifier damage Miss: Half...

The mechanic is different, but the intention and result remains the same, at least in the philosophy of how 4e works compared to other editions. Instead of asking the defender to make a saving throw to resist damages, 4e introduced different kind of defenses: Fortitude, Reflex and Willpower...

I agree, and that's why I have no problem with it, even though I still find it funny. But I also I have no problem with Damage on a Miss in 4e so... Although technically speaking, if the character is throwing himself flat on the ground to 'dodge' the fireball, shouldn't he get the prone...

oof... even harder to explain... I suppose your character just jump 20ft over it... in a close room... you somehow dodge every fire particle going at you...

I always found it quite funny that you can somehow dodge part of a 20ft radius fireball when you are right in the middle of the impact zone with no cover at all around you... or a dragon breath... or any area attack that allows you a save... suspension of disbelief I guess... or some mental...

Oh absolutely! But like you said, not as much as a proper Striker, so if you expect to be the killing machine of the group, you might be disappointed… but yeah, two weapon fighting fighter could do a lot of damage on a turn if I recall correctly!

Which is pretty much everyone outside the US... :P But I think it mostly had to do to simplify combat, since 4e was meant to be played on a grid, avoid the extra step to convert feets to squares you are talking about, only the other way around. Also, it may be a personnal preference, but I...

So the issue seems to be about players expectations more than the roles, not agreeing with the role chosen for a particular class. A matter of personnal preference regarding the fighter because as I recall, a lot of people consider that the 4e fighter is the best version of the class. But your...

Never felt broken to me, especially in heroic tier (1-10 level). In fact, looking through the monster manual 1 (first one release) and Monster Vault (release near the end where the math is corrected), there is not a lot of difference when you compare creatures that are in both and I still use...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Regarding roles, I always thought that classes in other edition had one, the only difference is that 4e decided to be transparent about it. I never thought the idea behind them was to make it more gamist, but simply a tool to help players pick and understand the class they're about to play and...

To be fair, that is a problem only if that is what you expect from DnD. Like I said earlier, for me DnD is a superheroic high fantasy system, so I have absolutely no problem with no injuries until 0, short rest and long rest. As a DM, I even think it’s a feature of the system, not a flaw (in 4e...

Then I highly recommend you take a look at Trudvang Chronicles, it’s the most simulasionist game that I know of and is very brutal. Don’t expect any kind of balance or guideline, it’s very old school in that regard. And there is not a lot of way to heal oneself except with time, naturally. I’m...

Yes, I agree, from a buisness perspective, it's better to offer a more generic system that will satisfy the most people instead of just focusing on one particular group and turn off the rest, and the popularity of 5e is a good proof of that. Ultimately, they made the good move from a buisness...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall it has always been the case in DnD, at least since 2nd ed... except for 4e that introduced the Bloodied mechanic but even then, it didn't really affect combat effectiveness, more like gives a bonus once in a while depending on powers and races, or trigger...

Could work in a simulasionist game, but in a heroic fantasy one, I personally prefer HP to be an abstraction and not spend too much time recovering. Personally, I loved the introduction of short and long rest and not have the character forced to spend a month in bed to recover if there is no way...

Heh, I think that regardless of how it’s named it would have get the same reception. Its a kind of concept/mecanic that you either love or hate, no matter how its called. It could have just been called stamina points, or endurance points. I know that’s how I interpret them since I like to make a...

Well, to be fair that’s what Healing Surge was representing. Pretty much every healing used a Healing Surge and once you get to zero, you can’t heal anymore. It was the body fatigue, the limit of each adventurers that forced the party to stop to rest. It was the real HP.

Totally agree. Like I said earlier, Skill Challenge as presented in the DMG proves that 4e was rushed in the beginning. The idea is great, execution, not so much. I also agree that they can work great with varying degree of outcomes. Like I said, I sometime use them to play out a travel from...
