    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

Frankly, I’ve always seen these rules about economic as suggestions, not rules to adhere to. It’s the kind of thing that a DM can alter as he wish since it’s mostly part of the world building. If he can create the geography, sociology and politics, I don’t see why he could not create the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

I should have clarified that I would not make them roll just for the heck of it but when the situation can call for it. Let’s just say that in all my years of playing, I had to deal with powerplayers that dropped the knowledge and social stats (not talking exclusively with DnD here) to boost...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

Well, as I said earlier, I don’t recall having ever face this kind of situation where a call was needed but not asked, so it’s only hypothetical. I assume it’s a situation where there should have been a roll so consequences if failed. But I agree, I’m from the school of thought that a roll...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

The difference is intention. I don’t think automatic success should be intentionnally given by the DM based on the roleplay of the player. But mistakes can also happen. I was replying hypothetically if that kind of mistake happened (nobody realised during the scene that a roll should have...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

Well, from my 30+years of roleplaying, I honestly don’t recall it ever happening. But hypothetically, if it were to happen, I don’t think it would be a real problem. DnD is not a competition and nobody is perfect, so honest mistake can happen. First of all, if a situation that could have...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

My answer is, for DnD at least, a little bit of both. With my group, when doing social challenge, we start by doing a natural roleplay conversation, or free-form improv as you put it. Then, when one of us feels like a roll is needed, we ask for it. If me as the DM is not sure of the intention...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Problem is that the people that believe what I said are mostly people that hated the edition, or that never really gave it a try and were parroting what was said online, and were using those false claims to keep other people from trying it, to make the 4th edition looks bad. I fail to see how...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

On that we agree. But I think that changing the name for DnD Tactics, with all that it implies, would have done more harm than good and validated some of the critisisms that was spread at the time. Calling it DnD Tactics would have implied that the edition is more focused on combat than other...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

This would just reinforce the idea that 4th edition focused on combat and didn’t care about roleplay, which is just not true.

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Exactly! Or some powers for class that usually target AC have the distinction to target other defenses. Like the Rogue power Piercing Strike that look like a basic attack until you realise that it targets Reflex instead of AC. I quite love the different defenses. I much prefer that than the...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

If by NADs you mean Fortitude, Reflex and Will, while going by the formula to create monsters it was effectively usually 2 points less than AC (depending on monster role), in practice, just by looking at monsters from the Monster Manual and Vault, it was more complex than that. NAD were used to...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Since I was buying all the 4e books from the beginning, I never bothered with the rule compendium since it seemed to just be a reprint of all the rules from the previous books. But now I wonder, was there some rules changed? Is there some parts that are still worth reading even for someone...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

While it might have helped, I don’t think it would have changed much. It was not just the visual but the language too… and I don’t remember the presentation being the main reason why people had a problem with the edition. There was a lot of factors going on.

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

To each their own, and I respect your opinion. It's true that the presentation can be off-putting if you are looking for a language that is more immersive. But for me it is the opposite, I love that the presentation is clear and easy to reference. In 4e, if you need to look for a rule quickly...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Then what are you waiting for to get those books out of storage and initiate some players to the wonders of 4e?

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

I don't think it would have change much. The Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide released just 2 months after the release of the core books and it didn't stop them from thinking that 4e didn't support roleplay and was focused on combat. I think it has more to do with the presentation and...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

Yeah, it was so easy with the DnD Insider character builder, everything accessible in one place and then you could just print the character sheet with all the powers with the right modifiers included. Now, I know I can easily find a list of rituals ordered by level online, but I so much prefer...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

If there is something that I would maybe rework a little bit I think is make the rituals a bit easier to use. I really love the inclusion of rituals and that 4e separated combat and non-combat spells to answer the old problem of Clerics mostly just memorizing Cure Light Wounds and Wizards Magic...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

I don’t hate them, I just don’t care about them and don’t need them. But if I were to develop a wizard school in my 4e campaign (there is one but I never had to develop it) and wanted to distinguish magic schools, I would probably just go with the keywords: Fire, Cold, Charm, Illusion...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

For me I think it’s the part in the DMG2 about Cooperative World Building where there is an exemple of a group of player coming into a Deep Gnome society and the DM let the player inquiring about their culture decide how their society is run. Having an open lore easily allow this kind of roleplay.
