The Quadratic Fighter - rebuilding the class (PEACH)

I disagree, but I'll grant you this for the sake of argument. That's definitely a more interesting approach to me. (FWIW, I don't think your sequence is growing quadratically...) This definitely removes the fighter as a choice for the casual gamer and pushes it towards "hard core;" i.e...

Patronage Project? For the Monster book?

I'm intrigued by the patronage concept specifically as a way to raise funds for more artwork. In my own spin on the patronage concept, the project will go whether or not we hit the target budget-- I already have an art budget for Monsters, but we obviously won't be illustrating every single...

What have been the big innovations in RPGs?

Perhaps it would make more sense if 75% of the songs you heard on the radio were U2, and a good portion of the rest were bands covering U2. (And then U2 decided to break into hip-hop. Sorry. /editionwar)

The Quadratic Fighter - rebuilding the class (PEACH)

The game session is not a relevant measurement of time. The PCs don't reset between game sessions. I was not aware that low level spell slots had been redeemed. Perhaps I should revisit the multiclass spellcaster without the emphasis on those top level spell slots. A mid-level spell slot is...

What have been the big innovations in RPGs?

That would be my list. With the caveat that the whole is greater than the sum of those individual parts-- none of them would have had anywhere near the same impact without the others.

The Quadratic Fighter - rebuilding the class (PEACH)

I can't see that you explicitly accounted for the fact that the fighter has no resource management: As the wizard uses up his spell slots, his power curve will obviously invert; you're comparing them in a static (fully rested) state-- which is fine, but neither is it negligible from a design...

Great thread; bookmarked. Exactly what I want to see more of. (Yes, yes... grammar.)

    [SPELLS and MAGIC] Design Discussion

Quick reply: I'm not sure Death Ward is a problem, but it IS an absolute, and provided for that reason. What I perhaps should have said above is that IF Death Ward is a problem, it is only so mechanically, and not because it poses a threat to verisimilitude.

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

I completely understand your point. The problem arises when (You have a multitude of options available, if you think creatively) ---> (No, you can' t do that. Or that. Or that. Or that...) Reducing the number of possible solutions and forcing the player to "think creatively" in order to...

    [SPELLS and MAGIC] Design Discussion

Magic missile is fine. It's a very, very good spell. All input is welcome. Note that Rote and Restricted are already mechanically defined; spells that fall under Ritual should certainly be called out as that generally indicates a problem spell.

    Trailblazer Houserules

You've been acclimated to think it doesn't feel right. I encourage you to explore it, but from a balance perspective, "versatility" is a non-issue with the RAW. Wizards are limited only by their funds, which quickly translates into "not at all." Both wizards (and even sorcerers) already had all...

    3E? 4E? PF? Trailblazer.

Brad said the same thing. That design argument, I won. You got it! Now if she was talking about the font size...

    [SPELLS and MAGIC] Design Discussion

My thought was to take it a piece at a time. Is there any comment on the mission statement? Anything to redirect me or focus me on, or away, from anything listed there? Once the mission statement is set, I can get more and more specific, and that can certainly take place in other threads if...

    [MONSTERS] Design Discussion and Preview

I did want to note that one of the things our new statblock will provide is "Spine CR." For the meatbag creatures, Spine CR will be very close to its listed CR, because almost all of its CR "cost" is its HD, with very little spent on anything else. For Animals, "anything else" usually just...

    [MONSTERS] Design Discussion and Preview

Honestly? It's outside the scope of what I want to do. The Spine is part and parcel of the level-based (and HD-based) system. It's the smallest quantum I want to deal with. Well that's another question. It doesn't need to be CR9. But it is CR9, which is why I'm satisfied with its Reflex save...

    [MONSTERS] Design Discussion and Preview

In some ways, this is already done: certainly Trailblazer doesn't place much of a premium on skill points, at least as far as CR goes. You're not going to break anything with skill ranks alone. Concurrent to this, the racial bonus (particularly in the case of animals) goes a long way in this...

Don't just be a spectator-- let me know what you think. Ah! I read in Stealth mode (white bkgd) and didn't even think of that. I was trying to get the indents to display the same color as the rest of the text. I'll back that out. Thanks! EDIT: Better?
