Exactly. This was my point earlier. If it's central to the plot, why bother rolling. Especially if it's an NPC. If it's an actual PC... discuss it with the player and come to a mutually acceptable story.

Yes, you can likely reskin your pact with any source. I don't see why not.

Are you thinking sorcerer? Warlocks don't have heritage, they make pacts. You could reskin the pact as a heritage, but why not just play sorcerer?

I think for the first official adventure rails are fine. Makes things a bit easier for new DMs.
