Joyful GMing: Fun, Factual, and Fair Rulings

Appreciate this piece taking this framing-- joyful. Yes! That gets lost in pages of heavy discussions over game theory, design, philosophy. Make the ambiguous like joy, unambiguous.

What are the primary reasons your players reject other systems/settings/games?

Noting while reading through responses that this seems to be a common touchstone i.e. a group that has more than one table runner, who then runs a different system for the group. And if they're not all running at the same time, allows the current table runner a break. Thinking back, this was...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your 5E 3rd Party Essential List?

Ahems, A5E Adventurer's Guide, Monstrous Menagerie and Trials and Treasures Griffon's Saddlebag I & II (I got this in before Micah I think, w00t!) Edit: Looking forward to Monstrous Menagerie II

    Why do like Lighter Systems?

Oft cited reasons: The lighter chassis meshes better with the game's design i.e. taken as a whole, it's elegant Can onboard players more easily who're new to the table or don't have a lot of experience playing with rpgs Too much crunch ruins immersion for some players bc of personality/other...

D&D General DMing 5.5 in a week. What changes do I need to keep in mind? Any good houserules? Also, Dragonlance!

I'm still very slowly working in 5e2024 rules. An "attack" now includes drawing/stow a weapon as part of the attack; these used up your free action originally (except when proficient in two weapon fighting).

Watching films at the cinema - also, RIP David Lynch.

In fairness, I have not been to the movie theater a great deal post-pandemic. That said, Avatar is a movie that came to mind. I saw this in IMAX 3D when it was in the theater. I still recall vividly the feeling of my mouth slack-jawed. I'd advocate that "arthouse" type films (for lack of a...

D&D 5E (2014) Your Favorite Sandbox Support Materials

Temple of the Moon Priests (Doyle, Allan, FraNe); it's a one page dungeon. Canticle to the Goddess (shotmaster0); 8 pages, was a submission to Knave 2E adventure game jam. While it didn't make top 3 for that jam, it's creative, focused, and tongue-in-cheek. Can easily tone down its more...

D&D General Sandwiches should exist in your fantasy world!

It's bizarre in one sense, because you look to something like LotR and food really has its place in that story. Re: ovens. The most common thing people do when they need their morning bread is make their dough, but bring it to their neighborhood's bakery to be baked. This still happens!

D&D General Sandwiches should exist in your fantasy world!

Fantastical settings aside, like punkette mentioned, a lot of food types we're familiar now weren't available necessarily at the time we pop-culture think they would be. What was common, and plausible to have in any one's fantasy game, were cultural needs for foods that were portable and could...

    D&D General Which BG3 companion?

I placed slightly more weight on whether I could portray these successfully as a table runner, while keeping in mind ones that I would want to meet as a player or be interested in having join my party. :3

OSR Any Actual Plays with PoC for OSR Games?

Spending about 5 minutes on youtube using search words like "OSR" "Interview" "RPG" "Games" unearthed these channels. I don't actively watch these but am aware of the third, as I've seen comments from them in other spaces. GMS Magazine A large library of videos; their subscriber total is in...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Small toy meaning a lego, a shard of pottery, a caltrop, or a ball bearing. I hate stepping on a single lego after thoroughly searching a brightly lit room for them

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

In this hypothetical, that'd be fine; I'd omit details one would miss when relying on darkvision when it's pitch black. (I don't use Perception checks a lot for standard room searches). I'd explain how darkvision functions as has been explained by others already. My players asked the first...

The Most Creative TTRPG Settings and Milieus

Two that come to mind that I've looked at recently are Paint the Town Red (Soul Muppet Publishing) and Frontier Scum. The first I've passed on as a suggestion to Vampire: the Masquerade players as it scratches that itch but in a different way that I found delightful, and the second title because...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Most anyone who played or was involved with Magic: The Gathering TCG over the years has expressed serious, legitimate concerns about: The overall state of the trade carding game and its health The organization and management of the Pro Tour, and specifically how one qualifies for it The state...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

In the 5E game I have been running, the entire party has dark vision. When the party entered a new room in a dungeon and one or more players said, but I have darkvision, what do I see? I usually respond with something like, Your experience as a competent adventurer tells you that while you may...
