D&D 5E (2014) World Building: Tech, Magic, and Society

But it could be interpreted that some 5e tech may have limits. Crafting a single potion can take ~days.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

As are questions, as per a part of your context that you discarded, ~"why does it matter?"

    D&D 5E (2014) Cantrips, a Curious Thing

Well, that's an explanation. Either that or high-level fighter are too weak compared to high-level wizards. In general, I think high-level class progression should be more pronounced in strength gain to make staying with single classes more attractive in comparison to multiclassing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Cantrips, a Curious Thing

💯 I agree that there's inconsistency but I'd vier toward asking why other spells function differently than cantrips. Short answer is probably because it would add a lot of detail to the spells. Other than that we might wonder why a 20th-level spell caster isn't any better at using a 1st-level...

D&D 5E (2014) World building: The forbiddance spell in military application

True, but arguably the shovel might still be needed to provide the "loose earth" that the spell says it can "excavate" and "move". Dirt and stone are also mentioned but I certainly don't see that stone could be moved if it's not loose.

Magnificent Mansion is another spell that can provide protection but perhaps more in providing a quiet room type option that in support of an active base of command.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skywrite: a weapon of mass communication/coordination

Maybe, but it may depend on how deeply the target sleeps. Message just allows you to "whisper a message" and Sending only says that "The creature hears the message in its mind". It doesn't say specify that it wakes them up.

With the mention of a "sprinkling of holy water", I'd have thought there'd be a similar consumption of the "powdered ruby". Is there any reason to think this wouldn't be the case?

Thanks and pleasure. I wouldn't have come up with this but for issues raised by yourself and your respondents. It's great that we can all work things out together. (y)

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

This is how discussion can jump from: to a further heightened: At least from the players' perspectives, they still may not have a personal goal to provide a "description of both action and intention in all cases". The approach may not always relate to a goal they naturally share. It's...

This is intended as a spin-off thread/comment piece to AmandaBarbarian's, World Building: Army building thread within which various arguments have been presented regarding the use of AoE spell casters and use of ground preparation techniques to protect areas. Among other facilities for...

I agree that wizard-type spell casters would show up by themselves but I think they'd be much more likely the ones with the expectations with demand for the resources to secure their own protection. That protection also might need to be tough and, in whatever way, mobile.

    D&D 5E (2014) World Building: Army building

D&D warfare would have more similarity to modern warfare than warfare in Medieval or Ancient times due to the potential for AoE magic. The similarity of AoEs to the effects of cannon fire, and bombs would mean that close formations of troops would present a serious risk. Phalanx formations...
