Modifying Cleric to be more like Wizard

I had a player whose cleric wore robes (light armour) and stayed back and cast spells. He put high stats in WIS, INT, and CHA and tried to avoid the front lines, and roleplayed some wise old kook looking into the founding of his religion. I guess it was a bit unorthodox (heh) to have a priest...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is disarming broken in D&D 5e?

I see Disarm used quite a bit, but I let anyone choose to use the existing RAW rules OR to use Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) to keep a hold of it or Strength (Sleight of Hand) to try to disarm someone. Just a personal thing that let's a lesser-used skill be a bit more effective IMO, and people...

D&D 5E (2014) Shapeshifting and the Druid Class

Probably looking at the Barbarian and Rage mechanics is a good spot to compare too. I like @DEFCON 1's suggestion of getting some passive/limited spells known to cast (Jump, Longstrider, etc). This can help with the exploration/utility parts. Maybe look at the Monk's Ki Points (ala Four...

House rule for minimum skill checks in 5e

There was another thread about using 3d6 for skill rolls (not combat) to make a solid bell curve. There were quite a few good points discussed, and I plan on trying out using 2d10 for skill rolls. A slightly more average distribution but still enough tension to make the roll meaningful (and I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian Totem: The Bunny

Jumping is a big thing. Baked in ability of Boots of Striding and Spring at the level 6 totem ability seems fair

    D&D 5E (2014) Reactions

This is a long thread, and I like (most of) the arguments from both sides, because they give cool explanations and game scenes and make me think. Any DM can make their own call and this is such a cookie-cutter case I doubt any call is the 'wrong one'. But look at the RAW to argue the RAW. Call...

Low Magic Alternatives: Full 20 level Class, Alternate Ranger

Makes sense, it would def mess up a no healing game. If any of my players ever want a no-magic Ranger I'd let them use this class, but will probably give them the option to heal as an Action. But, as you say, it'd probably be a higher-magic setting and less gritty so wouldn't be an issue for me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Darkvision in a Gothic Setting

Don't ban the races. Do not. It's much easier to take out darkvision than take out 65%* of the races. And seeing in darkness can still give disadvantage on Perception rolls that rely on sight. And maybe give advantage on enemy Stealth rolls. If there is only one Human or Halfling (or whatever...

D&D 5E (2014) What single new class would you like to see?

Also reminds me a bit of the Dark Sun (Athasian) Bard.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it houseruling to let a torch set fire to things?

How is this a thread? Can one fire cause another? Please tell me no one is actually serious about this question.

Low Magic Alternatives: Full 20 level Class, Alternate Ranger

Hey, I'm seen your other classes and am a big fan, especially as I'd like more options for no-magic class options. I know Superiority Dice have been one of the most common replacements for spellcasting in homebrew classes (and I think it is effective), but your inclusion of the thematic Ranger...

    D&D 5E (2014) One-shot kills

Our party was walking up to this decrepit fort to follow clues about some Serpent Cult. DM asks who's marching in front, as my Dwarf Paladin had 20 AC and knowing his style I jumped in. Make a Perception roll-> 15. Good enough, "you see a small flicker of movement on top of the fort...

    The surprise round and you

I would if there was an uncertain outcome. So if the Assassin wasn't sure to hit, or unable to kill the PC in one hit (which would be the only way I would let the situation happen). If it was some CR 6 Assassin vs a level 2 PC, he'd be dead or unconscious and I'd probably lose a player from my...

5E Goblin, Gith, Hobgoblin & Rakasta

Goblin: Should they have advantage vs being grappled as well as restrained? Overall seems balanced. I think that Small isn't much of an issue, just the -5 ft speed. So having 30 ft speed but a Small creature wouldn't be a negative. I think. Mostly going off of how I valued Dwarves vs other...

5e homebrew races- Goblin, Hobgoblin, Lizardfolk, Bullywug, and Yuan-Ti

First off, big thanks for the feedback. Absolutely not. I looked at the races you made, and think we both have the same kind of idea of [roughly] what the "points" are and how they can be applied. I don't think Weapon Training is great for racial options. It can make sense for lore/background...

    The surprise round and you

If an Assassin is able to successfully line up a shot against an unsuspecting common guard, why do you need to roll anything at that point? Is the situation that uncertain, or would the corpse at the gate now be a larger issue to be roleplayed?

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing a Drow

One of my players is playing a Drow Tempest Cleric. He sticks to the dim light/shadows when he can and almost acts like a Rogue (ambush/snipe attacks), but when in sunlight he uses abilities/spells that call for a saving throw like Sacred Flame. And him and the Ranger have found a good combo for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Suffocating

I'd treat it like someone trying to choke or suffocate someone as a baseline: -If it's something like holding your breath under water or not breathing in toxins, aka Passive stuff, use minutes. Endurance and race-to-the-finish. -If something or someone is trying to choke you by cutting off...

    5e Race: Slugmen

I think they seem pretty balanced. The only ability that really sticks out is Magical Harmony. It may be a bit of a dead ability early and a bit powerful after getting items, but as it's your race and your game I doubt it'd be an issue. Mike Myler has a good idea with the scent-based (maybe...

D&D 5E (2014) Should each class get its own version of expertise?

I do agree with this to an extent. Sometimes I'll call for certain checks for only those who are proficient, or single out the character that took the lead. But if it feels wonky to you, find an explanation that works. So even if the Barbarian manages to ace his Arcana check when the Wizard...
