D&D 5E (2014) OotA: Thorn Whip and Glabbagool

Does Glabbagool have his own place in combat? If so, you can let the Druid take control of him (ala the Motley Crew) to set up his own combos. -Glabbagool's turn. Uses Ready to move sideways/Engulf when enemy approaches reach. -Druid's turn. Uses Thorn Whip to grab enemy and pull towards him...

    D&D 5E (2014) Werebear wardrobe malfunction!

Per the 5e srd for the PHB Druid: "You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it. Worn equipment functions as normal, but the GM decides whether it is practical for the new form to wear a piece of equipment, based on the...

D&D 5E (2014) LMoP - Help with Ideas for Conybery (mild spoilers??)

Agatha is vain and aloof with a cold personality. Maybe her death had something to do with it, and it's ongoing effects (the winter) are her unfinished business and causing her to remain there. Or the elves who were there before were working on some 'helpful' environmental thing which backfired...

D&D 5E (2014) What is a good replacement for Darkvision?

Even seeing a whole bunch of (somewhat) repetitive threads about Darkvision, I am consistently impressed with the answers provided and get a new idea every time. Personally Darkvision hasn't been an issue for my table, I play up the DIM part of it and give disadvantage on Perception checks...

D&D 5E (2014) First experience with 5th edition and Lost Mines of Phandelver (no spoilers)

I use two things to change the odds: Advantage/Disadvantage as usual, or a +/-2 bonus if it isn't as drastic. (I don't usually do Advantage with +2 or Disadv. with -2, I'd either let it automatically succeed or fail). The +/-2 is usually a relevant tool bonus to a check or an environmental...

D&D 5E (2014) I need to increase my strength with a wish, what should i say?

Good. Good luck and may you choose your words...wisely. I was running LmoP and had my party of 4 going to ask a banshee a question, where she would answer any one question truthfully. They brainstormed some haphazard plan full of disguise kits and stealing fancy gifts to get to ask her one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger Hide in Plain Sight...useful?

It's the perfect choice when your party is slowly picked off one by one by some Planes-hopping dreadlocked hunter.

    Strong Guy inspired character?

So I think Barbarian suits your purposes for the big things you are looking for, and working with a subclass is a lot simpler than building a new one. I think Raging (with the standard resistances) give enough to Strength checks and standard resistances to cover the STRONGer than usual...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tavern Brawler + Rope/Hook... reach grapple?

Compare them to a whip, which I think is the closest weapon available from the PHB. I don't think many DMs would have an issue of someone making one attack with a whip count as a grapple rather than damage. Maybe a Thief's Fast Hands would let it use as a bonus action, but that's the blurry area.

    D&D 5E (2014) Novice Dm help

I think iserith has a solid encounter built around a corrupted Treant that looked cool. It was a one-shot IIRC, so should be good for a rotating table

D&D 5E (2014) WHY is there (still) no Class that allows you to use both Arcane and Divine magic...?

D&D 5E (2014) Standard security features of a permanent Teleportation Circle

But then they managed to alienate the important Dwarf traders because of their "random" searches didn't seem so random after Rusty Oakmead's unstable keg caught fire one time...

D&D 5E (2014) Will we see more 5e campaigns from WOTC like Curse Of Strahd? (eg focus on investigation vs combat)

My guess is that they will try out different campaigns, but also use the ones that sell well or get good feedback on as a baseline. So if PotA, OotA, and the Tyranny of Dragons line focused more on combat, it's a good time to try something new. I'm in a PotA game now and enjoying it, but haven't...

House Rules and You: A survey

My 'houserule' is that a lit torch is able to light other flammable or even INflammable objects on fire. Sure, I've have some players complain about this not being a strict reading of the RAW, but I'm a rebel like that

D&D 5E (2014) Do NPCs in your game have PHB classes?

I'm referring to how a piece of the stat block (like a Special Trait or Action) affects a monster's abilities. A Hobgoblin Warlord is able to inspire leadership, and their Martial Advantage trait gives a mechanical and roleplaying motivation to fight alongside their own allies. Goblins with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blade Ward cantrip

Mending, Magic Stone, Friends, Spare the Dying, True Strike, Control Flames, Gust, Shape Water, Mold Earth. From my personal experience, all of these cantrips are very situational and could be seen as terrible. Or if someone plans around them they could be really useful, but they aren't really...

    Strong Guy inspired character?

Maybe make it into a subclass for the Barbarian? They have the highest hit die, favour high Strength and Con, and get 'enhanced Str' (well, adv. on checks) while Raging. Having his fists count as non-finesse weapons for him (or whatever works post-errata) and scale up shouldn't be a big balance...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reputation and social achievements

Then to the victor go the spoils! Maybe come up with one single formula to calculate Honor, something like CR*10 or XP/5 or whatever works for you. As you assign XP from an encounter, you use that formula to give Honor/Notoriety as well. There could be some special cases like a high-Honor...

D&D 5E (2014) Do NPCs in your game have PHB classes?

I like a bit of consistency and learning about the world, both as a a player and DM. So even if NPCs are designed like monsters, they should still show similarities to classes. Most insects have poison, don't offer dental services to dragons, and humanoids/NPCs can generally be reasoned or...
