D&D Blog. Should Fighters get multiple attacks?

I like how Fantasy Craft handles multiple attacks. Each round consists of 1 Full-Action or 2 Half-Actions. A Standard Attack is a half-action. Thus you can attack twice per round (no penalties) at the expense of any other action (e.g. Move is a half-action). In addition, there are certain...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you like 5e to handle combat roles.

^ This! I'm sorry but IMHO, D&D has always been and should always be a ROLEPLAYING Game first and foremost. It is not Battletech, HeroClix or a tabletop MMO. There is more to D&D than dungeon crawling and killing stuff. That isn't to say that some combat isn't an eventuality in typical fantasy...

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

As for categorical immunities, I don't mind ones that make sense. For instance I have no problem with Undead being immune to subdual/stress damage, disease, poison, paralysis, stunning, etc. including spells that cause such conditions. However, if Undead still have a WIS and CHA score, then they...

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

Seriously - Check it out before you write your own system. Well worth the money if this is really the kind of system you want to use. Good reviews. "Elements of Magic (revised edition)". There are also expansions: * "Elements of Magic - Elemental Spirits" * "Elements of Magic - Lyceian Arcana"...

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

So basically a freeform build-a-spell system like the d20 Elements of Magic? FC already did this. The system has vancian spell levels (0-9) but changes from vancian spell-slots to spell points (and use of a Spellcasting skill roll). 0-level spells cost no spell points (unless you apply Spell...

How many roles should there be?

It's NOT radical at all. In fact this is another reason, exactly, that I am a fan of Fantasy Craft as this is exactly what they did and proved that it works just fine. The "Mage" class is the only base spellcaster (though there are also specialty mages) and it incorporates all magic. There is...

How many roles should there be?

Personally I like the idea Fantasy Craft uses for roles. They are loose enough to not be restrictive and they are merely a summary of what the class is designed to do the best. They also cover all areas of the party needs, not just combat roles. I don't personally see a need to separate the...

Spoilers: Some guy in Friends & Family playtest apparently violates his NDA

On a side note to all those who dislike the use of the term "Powers" for martial classes... Would "tricks" or "maneuvers" be more acceptable terminology? It seems like this is just a semantics argument. Or is the objection specifically to any non At-Will type of power? For instance if you...

What would you rather see: core rulebook or traditional trilogy?

I'd like to see 1 hard-bound main rulebook as there a number of systems that have done this very well (e.g. Fantasy Craft). Then the "modular" rules could be released as soft-bound expansions to the core rules.

    How about alignment?

I want Alignment to be a Modular set of rules. I assume default will remain the classic D&D 9 Alignments, but I want options. Personally I prefer the d20 modern Allegiances system or Fantasy Craft's alignments (which is similar in concept to Allegiances).

    Assassin in DDN

This entirely depends on how it is decided to define "assassin". Is an assassin just someone who kills for a cause (and money counts as a cause)? Then yes it could be a theme that could be applied to anyone. However, if "assassin" is defined to mean someone specifically trained in...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you like 5e to handle combat roles.

IMHO, the game can benefit from Roles. However, I don't think they should be the highly defined rigid combat-only structure of the 4E roles, which is likened to forming a group in an MMO (1 Defender, 1 Leader, 1 Controller, 2 Strikers). Personally, I think Roles should be revamped. Each class...

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

Here Summary from the 5E info Page: Vancian magic is core. Other options for other classes, but wizard and cleric are Vancian.

Spell Philosophy you would like to see

For magic, I’d like to see something akin to what Fantasy Craft did. Spellcasting Check • Spellcasting requires a die roll (FC uses the Spellcasting skill) • Spellcasting DC is based on Spell Level • Attack spells – the Spellcasting check is also the attack roll and must succeed the normal...

How Should Specialist Wizards be handled?

I think the Wizard should be the core class option. It would be a generalist with access to a core list of arcane spells. Then add all of the specialists as their own classes (as mentioned, similar in vein to the Beguiler, etc. but based on the specialty school). Each specialty should feel...

    Assassin in DDN

^^ This! While I enjoy what they did with the 4E assassin, I would prefer it to be an alternate. I'd like the assassin to be a non-magical/non-mystic class as the base and allow for the addition of the over-the-top, wuxia, ninja style aspects of the 4E version as something else, possibly a...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

IMHO, there needs to be a definition set for what the base martial type characters are and whether they are true enough to be separate classes and then go from there. I really don’t see the need for a class like the Knight. Some of my influence comes from how Fantasy Craft covered the topic...

    Specialty Priests Class

I'd honestly like to see the Cleric as the base class, with the Priest and Paladin being variants of the class, whether they be called Kits, Themes, Talent Trees, Builds, whatever. The Paladin class on its own has IMHO, never really been a good standalone class. It could easily be made into a...

D&D 5E (2014) Things from other games that are unlikely to be put into NEXT that you will port over

I too am a huge Fantasy Craft fan. I would look at porting a lot of systems over including - Reputation, Prizes, Alignment, Vitality/Wounds/Cheating Death, Species Feats, Spellcasting Skill - just to name a few.
