How do you use linguistics in world-building?

Here is another link to a resource that I tried to use years ago. Language Construction Kit

How do you use linguistics in world-building?

I have used this site in the past. It is fairly in depth but may prove useful. Omniglot I love the area that shows the different scripts.

    My collection of TSR products...

B10 was one of the hardest modules for me to get second hand, but it is well worth it.

    My collection of TSR products...

The Complete Handbook of Villains would be on my list of 2e books to have. It is generally rules-lite and a great resource for building villainous NPCs and groups. The Worldbuilder's Guide Book is my goto resource for any campaign world/adventuring location/sandbox design (although the...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

I don't have the time this evening to really clarify my point but I will try and give the short and sweet of what I think. The people that I am trying to set up "How to Host a Murder" for seem amiable to roleplaying. After that evening I would consider trying to teach some of them D&D using...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

I very rarely post but this thread and others here have really kicked my brain into overdrive. In another thread I posted that I would love to play in a Call of Cthulhu campaign based on "The Masks of Nyarl...." I would love to run/play in it for my wife and friends. The only way I see that...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

That's the rub. What Mearls and co. have to figure out is what made D&D great in the past to bring in into the future. When I think of how my wife views the hobby, I wonder if dropping the d20 license hurt more than finding a place for it in the new business model. Because where the wife goes...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Good question. If I remember correctly there were several issues. At that time I was a D&D/high fantasy purist. The setting as the DM described while fantastic was much darker than I was used to--also maybe too fantastic. If I remember correctly the DMPC was some sort of rock creature. I...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Holy crap this is long I thought about something after my last post before I went to sleep and didn't want to say anything until I had thought it through. I will try and make my point but I think I will need to take the long way around, so this might be kinda longish. And interestingly enough...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

I have written--and deleted--three posts because I cannot articulate a fundamental response to question that I kept bringing up. How does one separate the D&D experience from that of any other FRPG? I see more in common with 1e and WHFRPG1/2e; 2e and Earthdawn. I have had wildly different...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Unless "D&Dness" can be defined in some form or another, it is useless as a term for any meaningful discussion. WHFRPG1/2e has more "D&Dness" to me than 4e. That's just my opinion. And some will think 4e has more "D&Dness" than 2e. So again what is the point of the term again?

If you could play in a campaign of your choice, what would it be?

Call of Cthulhu: The Masks of Nyar... I just picked up the module at my FLGS. Amazing how much gaming you could get for less than $20 back in the 80's; it looks like an entire adventure path in one book--including handouts. [There was a story hour here--with months worth of posts--for this...

Would 1st-level Discourage You From Playing?

NM, misread the original conditions of the OP. In general as long as my character has some semblance of parity with the rest of the party, I am fine with starting at 1st-level.

A few Castle Ravenloft (boardgame) questions...

    >Marius: That sounds like how they ran the game. I cannot wait to talk to my friend and see if it resembles how we played. While I understand the game is meant to encourage a sort of fear and trepidation, I find it odd that they naturally found it in their best interests to split up in order to...

A few Castle Ravenloft (boardgame) questions...

Thanks Marius for the help. I started a longish post on questioning when and how monster and encounter cards are drawn and have realized that there may be a gross misreading of the rules on placing tiles and drawing monsters and encounters and the effect that white triangles have on both...

Playing like Celebrim - The Champion Class

Is there a PDF for this? I would find it much easier to read something as detailed as this as a PDF than a wall of forum text.
