No, UA for AD&D1e was OPTIONAL. It wasn't built into the system.

First review of the new Red Box

I prefer random ability generation. My issue with AD&D's exceptional strength is that it allowed a character to start the game with a +3 to hit and +6 to damage, but only if you had two exceptional rolls. The fact that I have seen more 18/00s than any other number combined strains the laws of...

    Will Essentials do well?

We have only seen a few previews so far. I'll wait to see months down the road what 4e looks like when the essentials class books come out. I understand your point about these limited previews we've seen and not thinking they are a big change, because they can be freely ignored and they won't...

First review of the new Red Box

I failed my Will save. I hated 18/00 exceptional strength with a passion. There is nothing like rolling a natural 18 and then a 24. One die roll means the difference of two levels to hit and a crap tonne of damage. Hated it with a passion. My issue isn't with ability score modifiers so much...

First review of the new Red Box

I understand the logic and math behind them for modern RPGs as well. But this thread isn't for my pontification. I'll stop derailing the thread concerning the stat bonus stuff.

Or I can add 8 class levels. Read that as a +4 stat bonus is equal to the same bonus you would get from having 8 class levels. Significant disconnect in my book.

Good point, but the thread title and OP does.

First review of the new Red Box

I understand that the +7 is not only from the stats, but more than half of it is. That's my disconnect. I come from a time when a Dex 14 thief was ok and got no bonus to attack. Now it's not, and does nothing but force players to build their characters to meet the new standard. That's what I see...

    Will Essentials do well?

True 4ee doesn't change what has been released before (minimal changes at best: MM and the thief move) but if it sets the standard for the class builds in the 2 (or 3, not sure) class books then the fundamental change does matter. I can see it now. People that love 4e saying "4e only games"...

Essentials - Will you be getting it?

Currently I consider myself a retro game player, but am slightly interested in essentials. I doubt I pick it up but won't rule it out either. A +6 or +7 to hit at first level? Yeah, doesn't look like they fixed what I dislike about 4e.

    Will Essentials do well?

What mechanical differences between 3.0 and 3.5? I gather from the previews that 4ee martial characters don't get daily powers anymore. Changing the fundamental base of the class and how it works is far different than changing durations of buff spells or splashing a few class abilities on the...

First review of the new Red Box

I wouldn't exactly call it a video review since they were given an advance copy by WOTC to specifically do a video review. I would call it a video preview and nothing more. For as much of the video I could watch, which was about half of the section, I get the feeling that 4ee is not for me...

Something to look at.... Gamers Seeking Gamers

I was amazed at the last map you had up. Sometimes it's hard to believe that RPGs have made it to every corner of the world, though I still believe that somewhere in Antarctica right now, some researchers are sitting down and playing Call of Cthulhu.

Something to look at.... Gamers Seeking Gamers

I tried to go back to it and cannot find out how aside from your post. I assume you haven't put a link to it anywhere yet. EDIT: After looking at it, I feel so alone in Richmond, VA :( (just kidding, I know it's new)

Heh, consider yourself lucky then ;) People from Pennsylvania, Missouri, Alaska, South Carolina, and Virginia know of the taint. Can you make your Will Save?

    Recombining Forums

Response to bolded text: Nope. General always seems to have double the amount of viewers as either 4e or Pathfinder+Legacy D&D. Normally it seems to be about 50% General, 25-30% 4e, 20-25% all other D&D. As of my last refresh: General 313, 4e 209, and Legacy D&D 188. So not quite 50% right now...

    non-4e D&D Players . . .

I'm not. It looks like those that still play 4e have no real business in this thread. And I applaud their collective restraint. It may just be me, but my cursory glances at the previews aren't showing me enough to challenge my view that 4e or 4ee is not for me. I do wish that some would grind...

    non-4e D&D Players . . .

Happy Trails to you... I agree with this. The previews make it seem like the power structure is not as pronounced as it was 4e. There are alot of things that I like about 4e, but the power structure and its gamist limitations turned me off to the point I would never buy it and never play it...

    The Pillars of the Earth

I saw the first two episodes on Comcast on Demand and have to say I am interested enough to continue watching it. Right now it seems to have a good balance of current action and setting up of future conflicts.
