D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

No, you just cited a study which I quoted but will quote AGAIN: "This study examined adolescents' attitudes about video games along with their self-reported play frequency." It is literally the first line in the abstract. Can't prove a negative really, but I can provide an article that shows...

But your argument is that if a person sees a negative stereotype in a D&D game book. Well, something they feel to be one, lets say. Then that person will be okay with it if he sees it in real life. It doesn't hold up! That because I, okay lets take me out of it, lets say SOMEONE. SOMEONE sees...

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

It is no absurdity to point out that the argument that was made in the 1980's by those under the influence of the Satanic Panic that "This game will influence the behavior of the people who play it" is the same as the ones made that portraying a race or stereotype in D&D will "Cause the...

I think they should hire a diverse staff too. Maybe not for the exact same reason. But on this I agree whole heartedly!

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie should follow the Deadpool model

Oh geez I kinda hate you :D I get so frustrated when I am trying to have a serious in game moment, when 3 of my 4 players are totally buying into, then player 4 makes a snarky pop culture reference that takes the tone from 'grim and serious' to 'lol' in a second flat!

And this is the SAME EXACT arguments they made in the 80's. That players would sit down at a table and use magical terms and cast spells then get UP from that table and suddenly begin trying to cast magical spells. No one is going to try to cast Dominate Person on their mom or dad to buy them...

Stereotyping is a powerful storytelling tool. It can of course be used for evil or used poorly. In a western, I am definitely going to have cowboy hats, six guns, spurs, and horses...cause that is the stereotypical western get up. It provides a cultural touchstone. My players will immediately...

Oh no doubt it is lazy. But is it harmful? He was not just claiming it was lazy. His statement was that this was doing actual harm. That it perpetuated stereotypes...I guess, I dont know, I dont have the adventure in front of me. Say that it does. In really weird ways. Okay. Is his claim that...

I have more to say to your post, but this right here: So you are claiming that because Vistani (a fake culture in a fake game) are portrayed as a certain way in D&D that real life people, specifically those of Romani descent, are suffering real life harm? Im gonna have to ask you to back that...

But again, picking up the litter actually has an impact on the problem. Whereas changing the alignment of a non-existent fantasy race in a fake fantasy game...well, it does not. It is not just that there is 'small' impact. It is that there is NO impact. No one's mind is changed about race...

I guess I just fundamentally disagree that the stats, alignment, or anything of such in D&D the last...decade? Two? are in any way discriminatory. Does the stats of an orc or elf become discriminatory? There has to be a better word. No one is discriminated against because of an elf having...

Side note! I really enjoyed the concept of the Wall of the Faithless. One of the few things I really enjoyed about the setting. That said, I've very much stolen the idea...I think the video game Mask of the Betrayer was really interesting and it starred the wall of the faithless! Good game.

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

It is a good post. I am of mixed minds on whether art in a D&D book will make ANYONE feel more or less included but I will admit that perhaps it might. The discussion though is alignment? The post you quoted specifically calls out that alignment or a deep dive into lore won't have any effect, or...

Only in the sense that it sets up a bit of a false narrative, and even then...it really doesn't. But then, if it does not matter why are there so many pushing for it? It has to matter, to someone, on at least some level. To me? Nah. As you said in the next points... Again, doesn't matter at...

You, amongst others. You are doing it. You are implying that if people do not agree with you, not only are they wrong, but they are wrong in such a way that they are actively supporting racism. I believe you also mentioned the 'dunning kruger' effect earlier, as well? Perhaps it was another...

I have no problem with making changes to be more inclusive. I do so at my table. I do not feel the need for a book or company to dictate to me, either way, what I can or cannot do. The responsibility to make players comfortable at my table is on those at my table and ONLY those at my table. WOTC...

Do you feel the portrayal of monstrous humanoids in RPGs has had an actual affect on the way real life minorities are/have been treated? I'm with you up until that point. "Oh man, they used black skin to denote badness? yeah thats pretty cringe. (handwaves) Look now they are super pale. Or...
