Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

It is much what I predicted as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything to address the other, more primary issue: how to appropriately challenge high-level characters in a meaningful way. It clearly isn't resource management or a dungeon.

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

[edited] I agree with your assessment, but the implications are utterly bizzare. It is as thought to say that 5e is such a good game, you should spend a minimal ammount of time playing it! There was a sentiment common to A5e designers that 5e seemed practically unplaytested, and this...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I hope you can see how that inheres a non-normative perspective. [edit] And how the point by @PJ Coffey inheres the normative perspective as expressed by 5e's designers, that killing monsters is how you get XP.

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I thought you were saying that it was in 5e somewhere. [edit] So I feel like the point by @FrogReaver about guidance for those rules in 5e still applies. And for some reason when I heard the phrase "didn't dissapear in 2e," I thought you meant that it was preprinted and accomodated for 5e...

That's news to me! Can I get a page number?

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I can agree with rewarding players only for straying on track with the setting, but I am somewhat surprised to hear the implication that Experience Points is a less gamist concept than checks notes awarding power-ups every few sessions.

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I will say that I disagree with this take fundamentally. 4e had both short and long rests, but that was a fundamental aspect of how resource management worked in 4e. Which is to say that, for all its faults (including being "too anime," which also isn't a problem for me), resource management...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

This seems vuagely familiar and very important! If you sent it to me on here I bet it is still in my inbox, and I'd be happy to shoot it back to you if you need it.

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

When presented in this way, I would hate survival games too. Most survival video games, for example, are not my bag. A decent survival TTRPG would need to make resource management strategic and attrition engaging. It would also need to make the image of survival heroic and emotionally...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

Ironically, although XP systems create a facade of fairness, 5e XP (and that of systems which inherit it like A5e) doesn't offer much of a compelling standard against which to measure milestones. That is to say, even the crapiest and most unfair milestone leveling standards are likely more...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

Apologies for not responding to your blog post right out. As you might have discerned, I like a lot of what you wrote. 4e style skill challenges are a pretty good piece of general tech, makes sense to delpoy it in exploration. Using Supply as currency requiring extra spending in bad...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I think its pretty wildly agreed that if you need home rules to run a certain style of gameplay, that that game engine does not support that style of gameplay. That said, I think I agree with your statement about the "base 5e engine" not being at fault, but it depends on how you define that...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

So I rather like both exploration and survival. What I don't care for are superheroes. Increasingly, I am convinced that 5e and its spin-offs are about creating a bespoke fantasy-aesthetic superhero and showing off their cool attacks. (I am one bad afternoon away from calculating how many...

Evil Genius Games and Netflix Settle 'Rebel Moon' TTRPG Lawsuit

I can think of several reasons why a person would settle out of court besides satisfaction. Expressing the fact politely is a mere professional courtesy. We can find out how satisfactory the negotation was if the details are revealed; however, I suspect the terms of the agreement were themselves...

Shadowdark Shadowdark: A How To Use Review

I'm so excited for this. I love the old-school gameplay, and the quality of life improvements are very welcomed. Can't wait to play this game in a spooky dimly-lit room! Just need to add a dragonborn ancestry...
