On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

We played Gygaxian when I first started, and we would do anything to improve our odds, by however little amount. The increased rate of fire for the darts was key. As others have mentioned, useless in melee, but even with a dagger or staff, you were useless in melee. Throw the darts, and still...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vehicle Rules

Does anyone have experience with the new vehicles rules from Ghost of Saltmarsh or Descent into Avernus? Just curious how they play at the table. Especially interested in the Mad Max vehicle rules in Avernus.

D&D General D&D Legos: Why don't we have them?

When I started playing with my kids, we used Lego minifigs as PC minis. I would use flat paper minis for monsters. I wrote about it here: Search Results for “lego” – Jon Bupp My daughter is 19 now, and runs a game with her friends. She uses Lego at the table. At session 0 after character...

    D&D General D&D Christmas Presents

Not D&D, but got some Magic: The Gathering stuff. My boys got me the Kaleidoscope Killers Secret Lair, and my daughter got me (and her brothers) a custom bag for my play mat. A couple Modern Horizons boosters in my stocking, too. Kids also got some boosters from their favorite sets, except for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprising character builds.

This isn't so much surprising in power, but changing the "fluff" of a class to change how the "crunch" is defined in a surprising way. I made a warforged tome warlock. I play him pretty much as a cyborg, with his warlock powers being different cybernetic implants. When he levels up and gains...

    D&D 5E (2014) Exclusive Spells?

I treat spells in the PHB as the "core spells". Those are the one on the you can choose when you level up, or are part of your cleric spell list. Spells from other sources have to be researched, prayed for, or given as a reward or treasure.

    D&D General Blog Database

I read a lot of different blogs. I always have. In the early days of 5e I was starved for content. So I started collecting up all the interesting links I could find. I still have those links from the early days in a clunky system on Google Drive, but they are not in a format worth sharing. A...

D&D General Using Music in D&D

Ambushed! I once played Slayer, fast and loud during an ambush on my players. I mean loud. They had to shout at me and each other during combat. It led to confusion and misunderstandings among the players, much like their characters were facing. Cliché Revealed Yes, I did the cliché during one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

I gave it a good summary read, going in depth on a few headers that caught my eye. Very evocative of the source material. I like how it achieves this feel by "adjusting the dials" of the base 5e rules.

D&D General Which edition of D&D did you grow up with?

I first played Moldvay, then went out and bought the Metzer Basic set. Most of my teen years were spent playing 1E AD&D, so that's what I voted for, though I bought and imported aspects of BECMI into my games.

    D&D 5E (2014) Combining Phandelver & Icespire Peak

This sounds like you're doing the sandbox thing here. Don't worry about what to cut or what to keep. These are all hooks. Your players will decide what belongs by what doesn't by the stories they follow. You can never have too many hooks for your sandbox.

Things your table should do, but doesn't do- The Fun v. Efficiency Thread

I hand wave shopping so completely that when the party reaches 5th level I've told them "You are all competent, seasoned adventurers now. Whatever standard PHB equipment list item you can have if you want it. If in game you realize you need a hand mirror, your character would have thought ahead...
