D&D General Is there a D&D setting that actually works how it would with access to D&D magic?

I'm using them as a framing device. A macguffin even. The party is just 5th level, and the players are just getting used to my take on world building, and the magi-tech. I'm getting them hooked on them. Then I'll introduce more things that they can do with them. Then I'll bring in issues with...

D&D General Is there a D&D setting that actually works how it would with access to D&D magic?

I feel this should have been a + thread. The OP basically was asking what a world would look like if the implied magical levels of the core books were applied to the whole world. Unfortunately, most of the discussion is about how this would not work, instead of speculating along side the OP...

D&D General Preparing Towns in a Sandbox

My method is to not make things from scratch, but instead build upon what others started. For me, I'd go through a bunch of short town descriptions. Raging Swan Press has a whole series of their free "At a Glance" series. Each of these has a map, a few notable locations, and a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Latest Updates for the World of Farland

I ran Crypt of Memory way back. Wrote a review of it, too! https://jonbupp.wordpress.com/2017/01/08/crypt-of-memory-review/ Fun single session adventure (if a bit single track).

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a general theory of party construction?

In 5e clerics are best served not healing in combat. Causing damage and taking out enemies will save you more hit points than you could hope by using the same spell slots to heal.

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a general theory of party construction?

I don't think there is any need to have a general theory, and party construction shouldn't have anything to do with how the DM presents challenges. It changes how the party approaches those challenges.

D&D General Playable races: few or plenty, common or variable, native or outsiders?

From a world building point of view, I like few choices. I have taken it recently to build those few races around what the players choose for their characters, though. In actuality, I prefer a Star Wars cantina type vibe. Not all races will be common, but no one bats an eye if a dragonborn...

D&D General Do You Run Published Adventures, Homebrew Adventures, or Some of Both?

Total MacGyver mashup. My current game started with When a Star Falls, though I completely changed the Tower, and plopped it into a town I got out of a Raging Swan Press supplement, but I replaced the town map with a Dyson Logos one. I've added in some homebrew encounters, as well as a few one...

D&D General What version of the Basic D&D/BECMI starter set did you first own?

Mentzer was the first I owned. I started playing with my best friend/neighbor with his Holmes set. I still weep for Aleena.

How do we fix the Sorcerer?

I use the spell point option from the DMG, and pool the spell points with sorcery points. The big difference that the couple sorcerer players I've had have liked is the ability to overchannel, or cast a spell known at a level higher than they could, if they have the spell points. Overchannel...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

With the level of magic presented in the system, the published adventures, and fiction, I have a hard time of seeing D&D as quasi-medieval. Arthur C. Clark says “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", but the inverse is also true. D&D worlds lend themselves to...

D&D General First official D&D game product you owned?

I really don't think so. My players are younger than me, and they tend more towards reddit.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

We finally got around to playing our Halloween one shot! (major scheduling issues, and the players more interested in our main storyline) I ran them through the Town of Brigepuddle. Download a FREE 5e Adventure!!! I ran it differently than I ever ran a session before. I had given the players...
