What is the single best fantasy novel of all time?

I love it. I’ve known people who I respect who absolutely hate it. Let me know what you think!

    Mervyn Peake’s Titus Groan.

Renegade Studios Sends C&D To Stop Small Creator Using The Word 'Renegade'

Renegade Game Studios reincorporated under a different name (Renegade Games) in 2016. That's not unusual or nefarious. Scott Gaeta is still listed as an agent.

D&D 5E (2024) Do you see Fighter players at your own table?

I responded “only one,” but I’ve been playing in only one campaign in 22/23.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 1 available for free!

This was the only of the recent Trek series that I was interested in seeing. I went in to it with high hopes and came away somewhat disappointed. The season was okay with some excellent high points, but it's not a great show overall.

D&D 5E (2014) Planescape, Bigby, Phandelver and the Deck of Many Things: Covers & Details Revealed!

I’ll ask the question in another way, because I’m sincerely curious. What would distinguish a 5e FR from previous iterations that would make it valuable to you as a game resource? I’m asking from the perspective of an old gamer who never latched onto expansive published settings, novels, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Planescape, Bigby, Phandelver and the Deck of Many Things: Covers & Details Revealed!

Got it. I thought you were talking about what you wanted from WotC.

D&D 5E (2014) Planescape, Bigby, Phandelver and the Deck of Many Things: Covers & Details Revealed!

I’m missing something. Don’t we already have the whole world on our bookshelves already? What would we gain from a full FR update to 5e?

    TSR Appendix N Discussion

Have you read "The Phoenix Guards" by Stephen Brust? It's one of my favorites. "The Three Musketeers" is "The Phoenix Guards" without sorcery.

D&D 5E (2014) Can an unseen servant fly?

Let me offer just a little pedantry here. Spiritual weapon floats and can be moved by the caster. So, it doesn’t fly, per se, but it can be moved vertically. Contrast that with the unseen servant, which can be commanded to move (presumably under its own power).

    D&D 5E (2014) Constructive Criticism

There’s a wide, wide gulf between “constructive criticism” and “telling them all the reasons they suck.” To be effective, make specific suggestions that your DM can implement to improve the game.

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

To be fair, you mistyped “PC” when you meant “player” (as in, “the PCs describe the tower,” and when he asked if you meant “player” you said you did indeed mean “PC.” I think you never did get a good answer to your questions about the accepted limits on GM’s description — an answer I’m eager to...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

It’s not necessarily too much to say that there are spell books in the wizard’s tower.

    D&D 5E (2014) Phantasmal Force question - logical actions

I think you made a fair call. If the player objects, ask them what their PC would do in that situation … Pick ineffectually at the leeches or try to take out the greater threat?

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Accepted in the spirit intended. Im hoping to play Burning Wheel. I just don’t know who might join me in that!

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Better? No. But I can try to say why it works for me. Fundamentally, I am inspired by other people's ideas and vision. [I am most emphatically NOT saying that you are not also inspired by other people's ideas.] To be clear, I'm talking about drawing on setting material authored by the GM and...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Agreed. I think a good DM can create and present an expansive world that doesn’t directly fulfill players’ dramatic needs, but which opens up possibilities for players to develop new dramatic needs or unexpectedly deepen existing ones. Some of that campaign detail might not pay off and might not...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

As I understand it, we need to shorten ranged weapon distances to shield DMs from criticism when they use terrain, foliage, visibility, and weather conditions to prevent players from attacking effectively at long range.

D&D General The Player End Game Problem

The person most likely to have this insight is Adam. This is clearest and least judgmental way you have framed your intentions in this thread, so use that to open the conversation. “Adam, the first two sessions seemed great! I think you were having fun.” Pause. Listen. “But I don’t think you...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Based on experience, I disagree. As a DM, I do some prep and a lot of improvisation (because if I ever prepared to my own satisfaction I would never actually get started playing the game). When I have some firm ideas in the background, even if the players are never exposed to those particular...
