D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

It’s a preference to avoid metagaming.

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

It's not fear. It's a preference. EDIT: some people have low tolerance for metagaming. That’s a play style preference and it’s not based on fear.

This. And a note for those playing along at home: this is very clearly NOT an example of "preserving a character to save the DM's pre-written plot." It's not a reaction to the game being "too difficult." It's preserving a character to participate in an unwritten plot.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Yes, I agree the DM has many options.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Hasn’t the DM decided that it’s a possibility most of the time? It’s easier to turn off the critical hit rule once out of a hundred rolls than it is to turn it on ninety-nine times.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I suspect it’s because much of the time they do want that outcome to be a possibility? But not at this particular moment.

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I’m happy to discuss this with you. I need to ask you to stop framing the issue in dismissive terms. I dislike tracking resources, and I’m not saying that doing so is wrong. I find it tedious, not difficult. I’m not expecting my every effort to succeed. If you’re willing to stop doing that, let...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Those are some ... interesting choices from folks who supposedly want to emulate Firefly. And on the other end of the continuum, your approach would not appeal to me for a Firefly-like game, either. Firefly wasn't about spreadsheets and logistics. The ecomonic desperation was driven by dramatic...

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

If players indicated that they intended to eat, then as a DM I wouldn’t let them take it back after an imperceptible saving throw. If they had not stated an intention to eat, then I wouldn’t assume that they would have eaten if not for the saving throw — I’d leave that to the player.

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

Why? In real life, I’ve been offered fruit by people I trust and declined to eat it. Fortunately, no one was openly speculating about my reasons for reacting as I did. :) In a gaming situation, it would be better to determine up front if anyone was eating. Then people could react in-character...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I can enjoy a game in which supplies of ammunition, food and water, and general gear plays a role. I don't mind tracking the depletion of resources. It can be fun to find a stash of otherwise low-value goods that can be collected to replenish needed gear or to face the consequences of running of...

Of Mooks, Plot Armor, and ttRPGs

Those are two separate agreements, and to play a game in which character death is not a possibility does not mean that the heroes always succeed (whatever succeed means in this context). I mention this because it's not clear that you are making a distinction between the two. I wouldn't say that...

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

I encourage you to ask the targets of the bigoted nonsense if debating their value as human beings is worthwhile.

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

Speaking as someone who has fired people for things they have said, I disagree. I'm not free to share details, but I would defend the decisions that I've made to impose both social and economic conqeuences. It would have been irresponsible at best and reprehensible at worse for me to engage...

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

I enjoy the DMG's appendicies of dungeon dressing, herbs & spices, and various descriptors, along with the summary of magical properties of gemstones (which, if I recall properly, is not an appendix, for some reason). I still find those useful even though I left AD&D years decades ago.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the stun from Psychic Scream permanent if it is impossible to make the save?

Despite the on-going effect, psychic scream is instantaneous, isn't it? That would mean that there's no lingering magic to dispel.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Is that worse than the outcome of your particiation being subject to a random die roll? It doesn't seem any more or less participation to me. I know the answer, of course -- to you (and a lot of people) it does seem worse. But I think participation in the game is a lot more than rolling dice...
