    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Many, many years ago, Dungeon Magazine published a sealed "mature-content" adventure. I don't think it worked out for them, since the experiment wasn't repeated.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I am rethinking the benefit in continuing this conversation, but I'll sum up to try to clarify. I'm going by memory. I don't want to expend the time and energy re-reading and quoting portions of this thread, so here are the broad-strokes (as I see them, and I could have faulty memory or have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

It was not a statement of fact. It was about WotC’s perception of their player base. And the question remains. Whose expression is being curtailed?

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

My bad. It’s late. Let’s try it this way: Whose expression is being curtailed by pointing out the WotC won't be publishing an update of Dark Sun because of WotC’s perception of the sensibilities of a significant portion of their player base (which neither WotC nor any reasonable person would...

    You inserted the word “entire.”

I would suggest that regardless of the literal phrasing, the clear intention was that you (the player) are taking the role of the killer, the enslaver, and the dying.

Wait. Whose expression is being curtailed by pointing out the WotC won't be publishing an update of Dark Sun because of the sensibilities of their player base?

No, I don't agree that's a position people are taking. Objections to depictions of slavery, obejctions to descriptors and artwork of imaginary races ... those objections are NOT grounded in the idea that people can't distinguish fantasy from reality.

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

Here's where I disagree with much of what you've been saying: No petition will compel a publisher add an addendum that they don't want to add. If the publisher chooses to add it, that's their right and a part of their own freedom of speech. No addendum will dictate to others what they should...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I really don’t think that WotC is sheltering you or patronizing you. They just don’t want to produce the material you want.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

We do have a broad range of media appealing to a range of tastes and sensibilities. It’s not realistic to rely on one publisher to supply it.

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

I do not think your response had anything to do with the petition. I was indicating that other posters’ comments about the petition were examples of the idea that materials must be kept available. I mentioned that in response to you saying that no one was arguing that they must. The context of...

    Chaosium hinting at something big.

The crossover potential here is amazing. The Ewings drill just a little too deep and the eons-slumbering evil awakens ... .

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

If the petition were to be successful, that would mean it was not a singular voice. It would be a lot of voices along with the voice of the copyright holder who implemented the change. That's what petitions are all about -- demonstrating that you are not one voice.

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

Maybe it's a strategy of asking for more than you expect to get so that you can get something. I'm not saying it's an effective strategy ... .

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

Let's say I lobby my alma mater to place an interpretive plaque on a monument of a historical figure who promoted discrimination against people related to my fellow students. Am I stifling freedom of expression? EDIT: To be clear, I am not proposing that the monument scenario is equivalent to...

What do you think of the post-Endgame Marvel movies? [[the mega poll!]]

I've seen most of these, and I'll vote. Here's what those votes mean: Good = I tend to remember the good parts, but there were definitely parts and not the entire movie. Bad = I tend to remember the bad parts, but there were some good bits -- not enough to carry the film The Eternals = A waste...

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

If I'm wrong and no one here has said or implied that it's good for materials to be perpetually available to consumers, I'm content to be wrong. (No time, energy, or inclination to provide links.) I was interested in whether people felt that authors' and artists' had more legitimate authority...
