D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

People here* have indicated that the petition is bad in part because if it gained traction WotC would likely pull the PDF from on-line publication, and that pulling the PDF from publication would be undesirable. Random people on the internet don't have the capabilty to pull PDFs from on-line...

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

Does it strike folks differently if it’s the authors or artists who want to stop publishing (in print or digitally) their own work — or updating and revising their work — vs. a publisher who holds the rights? Or are individual writers and artists expected to keep selling their work , in its...

D&D General PETITION: Acknowledge Hasbro's hurtful content (Black orcs, Asian yellow orcs, Native American red orcs)—through an Amendatory Bundle [+ thread]

Publishers’ disclaimers, critical commentary, and notes on historical context do not in any way impose an opinion on anyone. I don’t get it. But I’ll drop it.

D&D General PETITION: Acknowledge Hasbro's hurtful content (Black orcs, Asian yellow orcs, Native American red orcs)—through an Amendatory Bundle [+ thread]

There’s nothing wrong with asking a publisher or author to editorialize their work. That too is freedom of speech. And it has no adverse affect on freedom of thought. We can ask them to publish something, to refrain from publishing something, to change what they’ve published, to publish...

The Purpose of the + in Thread Titles

Ah, that makes sense. I read it differently initially. “Will you sign …“ can be a colloquial way of saying “Please sign my petition.” I didn’t think it was a real question intended to open a duscussion. Now I see that it can easily be read very differently. There were certainly other parts of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

No one who objects to depictions of slavery in DS believes that such depictions support slavery. That is so not the point.

Warner Bros wants to make Lord of the Rings films. Not remakes, fyi.

Ugh. I’m well on my way to hating franchise entertainment.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I won't suggest that we're not a weird society. But ... . How I regard violence as presented in a game is complicated. For me, some modes of violence are absolutely not appropriate for my games (realistic torture, domestic violence, and sexual assault, as examples). Brutal sword fights, being...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

In light of this clarification, I'll respond a bit differently. I have a high tolerance for problematic content in gaming materials that's not cringe-inducing and presented well, and I'm very critical about what "presented well" means. At the same time, I wouldn't expect my players to have the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I voted yes. I'll add that I think it's acceptable to include problematic content even if it's not explicitly evil and meant to be fought. And what I mean by that, of course, is that some problematic content is acceptable to some people in some contexts. I wouldn't want to decide for everyone...

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

I think a lot of confusion arises from @Dungeonosophy using the term amend when the meaning is really to attach an addendum.

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

I would like to point out that in the original + thread, @Dungeonosophy engaged with others who had dissenting opinions. It did not appear that they were stifling debate or intending to stifle debate. What Dungeonosophy did call out as contrary to the + were unhelpful negative comments which...

D&D General Why a PETITION: Stop Hasbro's hurtful content is a Bad Idea

There's nothing wrong about asking publishers to donate profits to suitable causes or apply more explicit notes to put the objectionable material into context. Especially if the publisher in question has made public statements in support of inclusivity.
