D&D 5E (2024) Long rests getting better but GM needs still not being considered

Sometimes one needs new rules. Sometimes one needs new players.

D&D 5E (2024) Long rests getting better but GM needs still not being considered

If the Doom Clock (or, less dramatically, a Consequence for the Passage of Time) is a bluff, no rules are going to help the DM resolve that situation. Whatever long rest rules are in place, it's best to give the players agency to decide when and where to try to rest. The DM doesn't need to...

D&D 5E (2024) Long rests getting better but GM needs still not being considered

I like that a lot. I would consider allowing interruptions to the long rest to down-grade the quality a step rather than eliminating the benefits completely. And I can see background traits to mitigate poor rests (soldier - sleeps anywhere).

    Statement on OGL from WotC

I think they settled quickly to save money. That’s why most suits are settled. But that’s just me speculating.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

That's appealing for some games. It would only work for me though with solid computer assistance to free players (and DM) to focus on what their characters do more broadly without considering tactical costs and benefits for every 0.3 second pulse on the Initiative Track. That's not the way I...

Remember when D&D was sold to a gamer and then he turned around and sold it to Hasbro

The winner is the first player who revokes the OGL and gets all the cash.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

What draws me to the EN World forums is exposure to ideas. I can see here widely divergent thoughts and opinions about the game -- rules interpretations, house rules, thoughts about how the game mechanics and the imagined fiction interact, ideas about the divide between players and characters...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

This reminds me of a DM who would frequently narrate bone-crushing, gorey critical hits ... before rolling near to minium damage. He might have eventually learned to wait for everything to resolve before narrating the outcome.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

Once more into the breach ... Yes, I'm quick. I can perform two dash actions in one round. Nothing requires that one dash (regular action) needs to take longer than the second one (bonus). I don't understand why you're insisting on it. Well, we got to this point, anyway!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

Most of the examples below of bonus actions are actually you just getting two actions. "This action can be used to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action." "You can use the Dash action as a bonus action on your turn." I'd prefer not to hold rigorously to the idea that actions are longer than...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

I lean the the other direction. If the intention was for all actions to have precisely the same duration, the rules would say so. There's no reason other than personal preference (IMO) to imagine such an iron-bound constraint. Bonus actions are additional actions, not necessarily shorter ones...

As I said, I wasn’t offering a solution. If my comments are a distraction, feel free to disregard them.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

Well, sure, not what some people here are looking for. But I didn’t think I was offering a solution to a problem. Just offering an observation about what seems to engage players.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

Full agreement from me. Not sure that observation is in conflict with what I was saying though. As I said, I would treat the 2nd counterspell as faster than the first because (in our fiction) counterspell is more quickly and easily disrupted than other spells. I've seen a countered...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

No, no, I get that. But there is no "it" that is "truly" not simultaneous. There's the gameplay, which is clearly not simultaneous, and there is the imagined fiction, which can be. You say that imagination is unable to overcome that. I disagree strongly, but there's no grounds to argue it here...

There is no actual combat. I know you know that, and I'm not being pedantic, but I just don't know what you mean. Fair enough!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

I'm not doubting that that's your experience, but mine is very different. I see players sitting like lumps when they're waiting between turns without options to react to what's going on outside of the initiative order. The players who have characters with options for reactions are more engaged...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

What's the "it" here that isn't simultaneous? Yes, the meta-fiction turn-by-turn action resolutions that the players are engaging in aren't simultaneous. But the characters' actions in imagined fiction can be. (That's why we can imagine someone ducking behind a pillar when we resolve a saving...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

IMO idolization of First Nations people is also a sign of thinking of them as fictional constructs and not as actual human beings.
