D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

I really should have expected you to find a citation that would pull the rug out from under me! I yield. I always took that Weave of Magic sidebar to be some setting-specific info and ignored it. But you're right -- it applies to the entire D&D multiverse (shudder). Despite that, I maintain...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

Hard disagree here on that! Your interpretation is not supported by the descriptors of the skills and of spellcasting in general. You're inserting a restriction that doesn't exist into the arcana skill, and you're broadening the scope of the religion and nature skills. Cleric spells are...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

Yes, of course. I wrote sloppily -- I meant that if the arcana skill was changed to be the "wizard-only spell lore etc." upon which a wizard's effectiveness relied, there'd be no reason for the skill to exist outside of a class feature.

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

@Maxperson I don't think that the arcana skill is what you think it is. It's not the foundation for the wizard's mastery of magic, it doesn't effect spellcasting or the power of spells, and it doesn't affect spell acquisition. A wizard with expertise in arcana will be no more powerful -- no...

D&D General The Importance of Verisimilitude (or "Why you don't need realism to keep it real")

Yes. AC and HP are abstract. They don’t represent one specific thing, but they can represent any specific thing that suits the fiction.

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

One can certainly do that in less than 15 minutes in 5E. Char-gen is very straightforward.

D&D General The Importance of Verisimilitude (or "Why you don't need realism to keep it real")

That would be my answer, in the very unlikely event that anyone asked the question. It seems trivial to me, but this is a great example of the fact that the lines of verisimilitude are very personal.

D&D 5E (2014) The Audience - Do you feel like you're the target audience?

I don’t feel like the target. I’m just swimming in the moat and occasionally get hit by one of the arrows raining down from the castle walls.

Planescape Manual of the Planes for 5e on DMSGuild

I'm not a casual gamer but most of the people I've played with over the last five years have been. I wouldn't have purchased Forgotten Realms setting sourcebooks for Icewind Dale or for Chult, but I did buy Frostmaiden and Tomb of Annihilation. With setting materials imbedded into "mostly...

    Planescape Definitive Planescape adventure

@Quickleaf I read through Umbra. Thanks for the recommendation. It's a great example of the urban adventure potential of Sigil, I think. It doesn't work well as a stand-along adventure, as there are some contrivances to keep the PCs in line, but I can see that the plot points would fit into an...

Level Up (A5E) Isle of Dread

Dungeon 114 (Sept 2004). Back issues are available for sale on E-Bay for about $10. [EDIT: written for 3E.] The adventure itself centers on a particular village on the island and the underground kopru cult hoping to usher in a demon-lord or something, which might be of use to you if you're...

Level Up (A5E) Isle of Dread

There was an update to the Isle of Dread published in Dungeon Magazine years and years ago that, if I recall properly, was useful in expanding and enriching the original module. I'll try to find it to see if my vague memory is at all accurate. I expect that most players will do what they can to...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

It’s not all or nothing. One can be uncomfortable with particular ways religion is represented in a game without being opposed to all representation of fictional gods. That’s why session 0 is useful. I don’t feel the need to drop out if the hobby just because I don’t want to play a fantasy game...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

As for me, I think the fact that the cleric class supports so many different, engaging RP concepts is the very best reason to keep it around.

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I see what you mean, but I would strongly prefer that those organizational connections be excluded the class descriptions. Define them in the setting materials and in the PC background. [Note: it's probably worthwhile to have some examples in the PHB or DMG without locking it into the class...
