D&D General Is there a D&D setting that actually works how it would with access to D&D magic?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Who? The players? The PCs and NPCs? And what is anyone trying to sell? It's simply a fact that fantasy and sci-fi used to blend together a lot, I'm not sure you can sell a fact.

D&D General How do you like your character sheets?

I answered portraits, landscapes and themes because if I'm printing something out I want it aesthetically pleasing not just empty space. However, my best answer is that I love simply taking a piece of paper and drawing up a character sheet from scratch, then maybe drawing some doodles if I feel...

D&D General Is there a D&D setting that actually works how it would with access to D&D magic?

Well it's funny that you mention Greyhawk because there's a lot of material written for Greyhawk that talks about how there are the ruins of ancient civilizations everywhere. And not only that but the level of technology was far superior and it's even explained that many "magic" items could be...

D&D 5E (2014) Buying magic items, yes or no?

I do like to sell magic items occasionally but if I do it, it has to be an uncommon kind of individual they run across, e.g. another adventurer, or even a Planeswalker or Djinni.

    D&D 5E (2014) Point buy vs roll

It seems like your point is hyperbolic and we're really talking about 5% differences.

D&D 5E (2014) New DM with campaign anxiety

No need to feel overwhelmed with that particular arc as it looks like one you can stew on for at least 3 or 4 levels even if you want, while they establish themselves in the world and discover through play who their characters really are. Possibly encourage to fill in their backstory slightly...

D&D General Not Railroad, Not Sandbox ... What else is there?

Of course you can always just use varying degrees of either primary style and switch it up from session to session. That way you and the players get the best of both worlds, sessions with more focused content and then plenty of free form flying by the seat of your pants you don't even know...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

I mean look I'm not some kind of expert on 70s and 80s D&D history and culture but I do know for certain that the main training wheels back then were the core rulebooks and other articles that TSR published to give more fun options. They were way more explicit in Greyhawk and AD&D about the DM...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

You really have to establish the understanding with the player that you guys are playing an RPG and the Game Master wants to put the Game in the game, and work kind of like a developer to make the product that hits the sweet spot.

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

I like how you phrase that. To be frank it wouldn't really make any difference whether the game even resembled 5E too much so long as the players and DM are getting the TTRPG experience they're looking for. Some of you might be surprised that even people who were developers for the 5E PHB have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

The player is not the monster manual, the DM is. It doesn't make sense to think a DM isn't being consistent and clear enough for the players simply because he tailors the encounters, RP, combat or otherwise, in order to provide the players with the best experience. You're not changing the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

Well the thing is that if you understand all the core principles behind the math, you can give literally whatever abilities, bonuses, what have you that you want to the players, and simply set up whatever challenges, RP, skills, combat etc. you present to give them on average a 55-70%...

Assuming that I ever said that I did anything of the kind is quite strange.

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

Yeah no... The 5e PHB explicitly encourages homebrewing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

The DM determines the math. The AC, DC, bonuses to hit, HP, you name it. Yes there are abilities that are beyond your control, but the sheer level of control you have to even fine tune it all on the fly by just monkeying with what you have available to you, is enough for you to achieve whatever...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

Lol but everything is dependent on the GM. If any person in general who likes playing D&D considers it, they shouldn't have to choose a poorly run game. They can run the game themselves and wait to meet other GMs who make the game whatever they (importantly) and their players will enjoy.

If that's her problem then she should ask for more challenging encounters.

The thing is you both couldn't be more right about most of this, he's commenting on how that perspective from that player doesn't make sense, and you're rightly pointing out that lvl 5 makes significant, noticeable changes and to the players that can feel like a huge difference. My main issue...

    D&D 5E (2014) Point buy vs roll

The method that I use is 4d6*8. Subtract the worst of four die and then subtract the two scores they want. It suits me better than anything I've seen in a phb because it doesn't normally affect the primary attributes all that much, mainly it entices the players way more to have fun using skills...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

I couldn't agree more about magic items in 5e. Them being commonly sold doesn't make sense. Also entirely separate from that is the issue that if the players could just buy magic items then the GM and party can't have fun with stuff like detecting magic, identifying magic, dealing with cursed...
