90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

That's not quite right. They filtered based on metrics that indicated whether or not a character was being used. That included things like whether hit points changed and such. I don't know the details. I'm sure it's not perfect. But they did take a shot at only including 'active' characters. AD AD

90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

I think my favorite part of our current campaign is that it never had an overarching metaplot. Don't get me wrong. I love those big story campaigns too (ran a different campaign from 1 to 20 across several editions and many years that had a huge world ending story line). But in this game, I...

90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

It's been really sporadic. We started the game at the tail end of the playtest. So 2014ish. We try to play once a week for about an hour or an hour and a half (via google hangouts, roll20 and DDB). But doing that math backwards would be really misleading. Each year, we've had months without...

90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

As I usually do in threads like this these days, I'll note that I'm DM'ing a tier 4 campaign (PC's closing in on 20th level and the big climax). We've played since 1st level. It did take us a long time (mostly because our play time is limited). But man, we are having a blast. AD

Mike Mearls Talks Greyhawk in Lore You Should Know

Couple thoughts on this: 1) Mike has clearly been trying to find a way to publish Greyhawk for quite awhile now. He has said over and over again that it's his favorite settting, he wants to publish it, but he has to find a way to have it make sense business-wise. What I wonder is whether this...

D&D 5E (2014) Dispute about Rings of Elemental Command

The SRD is not up to date with errata. See here: https://twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/1075888185714962432 In response to a question about whether the SRD would incorporate errata, Jeremy replied: "I'll check with the SRD keepers to see if they'd like it updated. The last time I checked...

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

I found this comment from Jeremy very interesting (from twitter): "It's easy to forget that the Beast Master can get something like a sidekick in addition to a beast companion. The new option is additive; it doesn't replace the beast companion. And a DM might allow the beast companion to take...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Nathan Stewart Teases New D&D Setting Book in 2019

It might be telling for example if a UA between now and spring had psionics, as Mike has telegraphed pretty hard that he thought they were necessary for Dark Sun. Not that I'd say it's definitive, but it would create fun speculation fodder. AD

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Nathan Stewart Teases New D&D Setting Book in 2019

I love the idea of this. However, from a business perspective, I think the problem is opportunity costs. Creating such a high end product would presumably entail quite a bit of effort on their part and be relatively pricey to produce. Maybe they could move enough units to make a profit, but for...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Nathan Stewart Teases New D&D Setting Book in 2019

I feel like that too (though it might just be the dreamer in me). But I sometimes think he has already come up with a clever way to pull it off and just has to wait till the more easily justifiable settings (Eberron, DarkSun, occasional MtG) are finished. I'm really hoping the Eberron...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Happy Fun Hour, Nov 27 2018

Well, he pretty much has explicitly stated he's working on alternate class features that he wants to release in some official fashion (though the venue is up in the air). Might be a year but probably not 5. And it might be that playtesting and development will mean the final version looks...

Nentir Vale Coming to Dungeons and Dragons

I know what you mean. I sort of liked the Nordic take on the origin story (Primordials versus Gods ~ Giants versus Gods). That said, I also really relate to the kind of changes Mike is making to the setting. Not the specific changes. I mean, I like that take too-- mortals that became gods...

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

That table is a straight cut and paste from a fighter subclass he did awhile back. I suspect it will get polished and reflavored AD

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

Holy cow! Some awesome person already done way better than a summary (and has done them for the other Happy Fun Hours as well if you are interested). Here's the alternate ranger class feature text: https://thinkdm.wordpress.com/hfh/revised-ranger-2018/ It does lack Mike explaining his...

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

Though, I should add that none of the changes would allow the ranger to nova like a paladin. Instead, Mearls goal was to make the class features more meaningful rather than feeling like ribbons. If I get time later, I'll try to summarize his draft ideas. But no promises. AD

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

Again, I think that Mearls approach for alternate class features will address these problems. At least that's my initial impression. AD

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

Short answer: Too big a change to introduce a whole new class. (It's more nuanced than that, but I don't have time to type that much). However-- This alternate class feature approach is not small tweaking. He addresses exactly your point-- That the ranger choice points don't feel meaningful and...

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

In case anyone is interested, Mearls is working on the alternate class features for the Ranger in his Happy Fun Hour right now (11/20/2018). AD

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Of Ships and The Sea

So we could go back and forth for a long time on this topic, but I don't really see that we'd get anywhere far (for either of us). Normally, I leave these discussions for others who find them more interesting. Responded on an odd whim earlier today. So, lets just say we can agree to disagree...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Of Ships and The Sea

I'm not quite sure what this means. You mean they don't tell us in advance what there plans are? That's true. Or do you mean that they are willing to change their internal plans to ensure that they don't sacrifice quality in order to meet arbitrary deadlines? Probably also true. Is it possible...
