D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the Hermaphrodites???

Does the fictional mythic character have both male and female sex organs?

D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the Hermaphrodites???

I'm not simply going to take someone at their word that there is now a reason not to use a term that I have used in its proper place. Won't do it. There are far too many claims that this word or that word has now become a bad word for me to accept on its face that these claims are always...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me grok mega-dungeons

When someone says megadungeons are all about this or that and that they prefer role-playing or solving mysteries it isn't hard for a person who does not know better to assume you cannot do those things. The campaign I just ran was set in the Temple of Elemental Evil. My players have done...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me grok mega-dungeons

You can role-play in a mega-dungeon. You can have mysteries in a mega-dungeon. You can have plots carried out in a mega-dungeon. I disagree with anyone who claims otherwise as their opinion contradicts my experience as a player and as a DM who has run mega-dungeons.

D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the Hermaphrodites???

Certainly, there are terms that are pejorative and they have no place. At a certain point, it is reasonable to deny another person the privilege of deciding for you that a term is "now" considered pejorative because they said so.

    D&D 5E (2014) Which Greyhawk?

I like both. I just think they were over-used. I want more variety. I want characters to go to a new place and discover new threats. There are plenty of scary things hinted at in Greyhawk. No need to trot out Iuz and Scarbro for everything. Just imagine the cool things you could do with Beltar...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls interview - states that they may be getting off of the 2 AP/year train.

Perhaps those sacred cows achieved different goals. Later editions place far more emphasis on character builds than earlier editions. Characters in earlier editions primarily diverged through acquisition of spells and magic items rather than "dipping" classes, feats, and the like. There is no...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which Greyhawk?

I would have preferred if the war hadn't been all-encompassing. And the over-use of Iuz and the Scarlet Brotherhood got on my nerves. I still found plenty of use out of the rules updates in From the Ashes but I ignored the bulk of additions to the timeline.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls interview - states that they may be getting off of the 2 AP/year train.

I get that THAC0 bothered some people. I don't get the volume about it. 2nd Edition did not die because of THAC0. It declined because of business decisions and circumstances for TSR. And plenty of people chose not to jump on board for 3rd Edition and I doubt it had much to do with moving away...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls interview - states that they may be getting off of the 2 AP/year train.

"Jolly for you...if that was not clear enough for you" - Are you intentionally trying to set a negative tone? "incredibly Byzantine in comparison" is hyperbole. I see the benefits of the "d20" system of rolling d20s. I just don't buy any implication that THAC0 was incredibly Byzantine...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls interview - states that they may be getting off of the 2 AP/year train.

I'm another guy who played plenty of 1st Ed. and 2nd Ed. The old armor class was counterintuitive and took all of a few seconds to understand. Convoluted? Nope. It wasn't hard to understand. It just wasn't the simplest thing to understand. Archaic? Nope. Rolling high comparing modifiers is...

D&D 5E (2014) Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

I've always appreciated Gygax's restraint. It encouraged innovation. In my campaign, I have Drow enclaves worshipping other demon princes/princesses and the culture of those enclaves are not necessarily matriarchal.

    D&D 5E (2014) TftYP - Against the Giants

The tastes were different in the 70s. The culture was more influenced by tabletop wargames and, I daresay, folks who were used to working harder to make their own fun. I think any word that describes the design of G1 as amateurish or primitive or the like lacks perspective and is attempting to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls on Settings

I agree with a lot of this. 1. Greyhawk doesn't need big setting books. Maybe, as some have suggested, a 5E version of the 476CY setting. Other than that, just stick to adventure paths that exploit some of the things that stand out about Greyhawk. 2. The sci-fi was mostly the Barrier Peaks...

D&D 5E (2014) Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

Yeah, I played 1st edition for 6 years. I did not find it or THAC0 cumbersome. I did not have an adult teaching me how to play and I began playing at the age of 12. So, a 12-year-old had a great deal of fun with 1st edition and understood the rules without help. Sometimes, I think some folks...

D&D 5E (2014) Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

In 2E, it is pretty easy to convert to to-hit bonuses for the character and add the armor class of their target with the goal of a score of 20 or more. 2nd Level fighter with a 17 strength has +1 to hit from level and +1 to hit from strength for a total mod of +2 and attacks a guy in chain mail...

D&D 5E (2014) Running T1-4 (ToEE) for the first time. Any advice?

I have run this a few times. The last time I re-worked the Temple into an even larger version of itself. This module series screams the need for note-taking, color-coding, and careful thought about what the various NPCs would be doing as the adventure progresses. I have read suggestions of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls on Settings

I agree that SpellJammer needs its own "universe". I see it as a space fantasy/space opera setting without the science. It needs a world (worlds system) where it is the primary focus. It can only be window dressing to other settings.

Greyhawk is easily compared with Forgotten Realms as FR borrowed quite a bit from Greyhawk. What makes Greyhawk look more like Forgotten Realms are later Greyhawk supplements. If you move it back to pre-war Greyhawk some of the comparisons fail. What I would like to see done with Greyhawk is...
