D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

The thread is really about fiction, not friction.

    AD&D 1E Common House Rules for AD&D?

What I learned from this thread is that a lot of people back then house ruled things that would be later incorporated in the base rules of subsequent editions. Fascinating.

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

AD&D initiative system is arguably the best attempt at capturing the fiction and emulating the simultaneity of action. The trade-off here is that it's too complex.

D&D 5E (2014) How does “optimization” change the game?

When people talk about character optimization, it's usually safe to assume they are talking about combat.

D&D 5E (2014) How does “optimization” change the game?

That's a pretty interesting question. Back in the two previous editions, I was really into optimization and I always expected my players to be fully optimized. But now in 5e? In most of my campaigns we dont even use feats or multiclassing. I believe it's partly because 5e don't come even close...

D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Sorcerer + Warcaster + Polearm Master + Eye of Darkness = Is It insane?

From time to time I catch myself considering homebrewing center grip shields, but no matter how I look at that, they are always going to be a stronger option compared to arm strapped ones.

D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Sorcerer + Warcaster + Polearm Master + Eye of Darkness = Is It insane?

Maybe at those tables with only one encounter with a single powerful enemy every long rest... Which I'll admit seems to be the norm among the new guys who despise traditional dungeon crawling.

D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Sorcerer + Warcaster + Polearm Master + Eye of Darkness = Is It insane?

While I agree that this build (and it's variations) isn't the best team player, the obscurement is only really a problem if your team have spellcasters who rely on seeing the target of their spells. Martials are unlikely to be hindered due to the fact that most of the time, Darkness won't really...

D&D General What is adversarial DMing?

Well, good thing D&D 5e doesn't really need a "balanced party" by design. But yeah, I believe it's best to build character agnostic campaigns and let the players figure out how they want to approach the challenges.

D&D General What is adversarial DMing?

Nah. You are seeing thing backwards imo. The DM proposes a campaign tone and theme and then the players should adjust and build characters that would fit into that campaign. Also, I strongly believe that every DM should make a list of which classes, races and sourcebooks are allowed at any...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

Orc stills technically adjacent, so no opportunity attack is provoked.

D&D General What is adversarial DMing?

These guys have been putting up with my bs since the late 90's. I still remember when 3e came out and we went together to the store to get the new books... I like to believe they would have left already if they didn't like the style.

D&D General What is adversarial DMing?

I usee to be a pretty chill, "fan of the party", never say no DM through the course of 4e.... But then 5e came about and unleashed the Hyde within me. Now I'm a killer DM who relishes on the player's suffering and tears. My philosophy shifted towards combat as war and I'm genuinely delighted...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

Do the ground really block the attack though? I'd be under the impression that it only provides cover? Same as attacking someone around the corner of a stone wall. EDIT: It shouldn't be a big deal, really. 3d movement has always been present in my games since forever...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

Yes, you are right about the attack occuring on the last square adjacent to you. So I don't see how burrowing would prevent the opportunity attack?
