    D&D 5E (2014) Bravely running away

Your overly emotional response was uncalled for. There's nothing in my post suggesting my support for "DM's novel writing desires". On the contrary, I'm a firm believer in the power of emergent storytelling. Unscripted situations are often the most memorable ones. Now, on the time wasting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bravely running away

The player have a choice of either leaving them and surviving or trying to drag them along and risk being killed. This is a feature of a roleplaying game, not a bug. It's really puzzling that people sometimes bring up arguments like that: "Well, (insert rule) sucks because it forces the players...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

You heard that, but have you actually read them?

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

And that's why people should read the Dungeon Master's Guide.

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

I agree. I know people who didn't even know those rules were optional and had always assumed them baseline. That said, I'm really disappointed with the removal of the "this is optional" wording. Now as a DM, I'm gonna have to actively ban those from my games instead of just not opting in like I...

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

Yes. I finally had the chance to read the book and check for myself. I never said otherwise.

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

This is true for pretty much everything in the game. Still, in the 2014 book, multiclassing and feats were presented specifically as optional add-ons to the game, that's my point. Maybe I'm not making myself clear enough.

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

Page 163 of the old PHB says: "The combination of ability scores, race, class, and background defines your character's capabilities in the game, and the personal details you create set your character apart from every other character. Even within your class and race, you have options to...

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

Just read the Multiclassing entry in the new PHB. It is not optional in the same sense it was back in 2014. Thank you for the non answer though.

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

Is it still optional in the new PHB?

    D&D 5E (2024) Predictions for the 2024 DMG?

Excluding Bastions, they didn't say anything about an optional systems chapter in the new DMG. My only hope is that the book isn't just filled with player facing stuff. Encounter building maths and magic items are the least interesting part imo.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predictions for the 2024 DMG?

I see what you say and I do agree to a certain extent. The book could use some more concrete examples and clear guidance. Both 4e DMGs did it and they are largely considered two of the best of their kind. Still, people largely exaggerate the issues with the 2014 DMG. I have seen people calling...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predictions for the 2024 DMG?

Of course, you are free to disagree however you want, but this is just how the advice goes throughout the whole DMG. It's consistent with it's own game philosophy and frankly, one of my favorite aspects of the book. For example page 236, in the chapter on Running the Game, under the "The Role...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 PHB errata thread

As I said in the post you have just quoted, I am not disagreeing with you. Sorry, don't know the reference. I think it's supposed to be something funny though?

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 PHB errata thread

While I do agree that the wording should provide the DM with a certain degree of protection against rules lawyering, I believe it would be more effective to focus on teaching players on the importance of RAI. There's so much pedantry we can tolerate before the game becomes unplayable.

Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player's Handbook Is Already Getting Errata

At what point exactly has @Maxperson been uncivil towards you? This is a discussion forum. Of course you are bound to encounter people with different views and experiences at any given topic.

Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player's Handbook Is Already Getting Errata

Look, we're probably getting nowhere with this, but I'm going to assume you are arguing in good faith and give it one more shot. As I see it, one has to hold a firm grasp of the rules and know not only how they work but also the intentions behind their existence. This is especially true when a...

Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player's Handbook Is Already Getting Errata

Don't know who you are calling strident, but since you quoted me, I will speak for myself. Yes, I strongly believe the DM should be the ultimate arbiter or rules on his own table. This goes without question. That said, it is useful to discuss the written rules and also try and analyse the...

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

That's precisely what I do depending on the situation, and that's not an issue at all. Sometimes you do achieve overwhelming victory even befor the fight starts. Who told you that fights are supposed to be always fair?

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Of course it does. Talking in 2014 is not free. According to the rules, talking is limited to only a brief sentence during your own turn.
