Bob Salvatore on the various editions of D&D

Windjammer, Love the vid! Thanks for sharing. It was great seeing Greenwood, Elmore and Salvatore gaming. Now I'm off to Youtube to watch the rest of their game. :) -Havard

What kind of setting "fluff" do YOU want to see in an RPG?

The Classic D&D Gazetteer line is an excellent model for the kind of setting product I would like to see made in the future, regardless of edition. -Havard

The whimsical element of D&D vs AD&D

I think it is more a matter of the Classic D&D line (ie not AD&D) having more freedom to experiment with different rules, styles and approaches to the game. That said, I like Needle and the Spiders on the Moon part is probably my favorite aspect of the module. Havard

    The Father Of...

Your assumption is that Roleplaying grew out of storytelling, whereas its true origins can just as much be traced back to war gaming, if not more so. :) Havard

While I do not always agree with James' bias, I have always appreciated his analytical approach and many of his observations are very interesting. This is why I often refer to his comments in my own blog, sometimes in agreement and sometimes in disagreement. -Havard

Best Published Setting for "Sandbox" Campaign?

Blackmoor! Get the D20 Dave Arneson's Blackmoor Sourcebook, the 4E version, or good old DA1 as starting point and you are pretty much set. Good if you want a bit of weirdness thrown in, even if you can easily ignore that aspect of Blackmoor too. -Havard

As a player, I like a campaign that...

As a player, I prefer some sense of direction, especially early on in the campaign. I have played in some campaigns where I have felt really lost and not really felt able to take the game in any direction either. I do love it when the players gradually gain more and more control of the game...

The "Old School Revival" - The Light Bulb Goes On

I think you make a great summary of the situation Luce! A few comments: Good points. Personally I like playing multiple editions to experience all the different "spices". I think the assumption that later editions are better is inherently wrong. On the one hand later editions do have the...

Best "Known World" Gazetteers: Fluff, Not Crunch?

Good decisions! In the case of Gaz1 vs. Karameikos boxed set (K:KoA), the information within is fairly similar, but the flavour is quite different. -Havard

Preview of "Dungeons & Dragons" #1, on sale today!

I think it looks great. I also really like the first cover, which seems to be a bit of a shift away from the "iconic character" look. -Havard

Me too! With the interest in "Old School" material, and in the history and roots of the hobby in general, there very well could be a market for the people who actually were there forging D&D from the very beginning. -Havard PS: Thanks for mentioning my blog, darjr! :)

Best "Known World" Gazetteers: Fluff, Not Crunch?

Ierendi is a bit all over the place. It is a sort of pirate nation, but each island has its own unique flavor and that is more where the focus is. Minrothad is the other major sea power, but the focus here is on sea trading guilds rather than piracy. In my old Freeport/Mystara campaign, I had...

    The Father Of...

It seems to me that Wesely brought a roleplaying element into the War Game Campaign framework. The first Braunstein at least, was part of a Napoleonics Game campaign. As the Braunstein variants continued, the focus shifted more and more from the War Game towards making the roleplaying the center...

    The Father Of...

While I agree with you about the significance of Gary's efforts, I think you underestimate the importance of actually coming up with the idea. Both men were neccessary to make it happen. I also think Arneson could have contributed more, had he been met with anything other than hostility from...

Best "Known World" Gazetteers: Fluff, Not Crunch?

Actually, if you look at it again, you will find that the adventure park aspect of the gazetteer doesnt really take up that much page space. The problem is that this is the overarching theme, which makes it seem like that's what the gazetteer is about. Digging a bit deeper though, the majority...

Best "Known World" Gazetteers: Fluff, Not Crunch?

Out of the ones you listed, The Elves of Alfheim, The Northern Reaches and the Golden Khan of Ethengar are the best. I consider them the most evocative in terms of the cultures and histories they present. Minrothad and Rockhome are not bad either, but they didnt get my vote this time. Of...
