D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

This is what I'd do too. If you want the world to be based on the assumption that the disease/curse is so horrible that it needs special conditions to cure/remove, make it so. Tomb of Annihilation does it with the Soul Monger. In that adventure path, the Death Curse can't be cured until the...

D&D 5E (2014) is the dodge action broken?

That's definitely when the players in my groups use it. The tank who is clogging up a narrow passageway, or surrounded by enemies, will dodge and take the brunt of the attacks while others can pick off some of the foes one by one, or get themselves into a better position.

D&D 5E (2014) is the dodge action broken?

It is a good option at times, but it does not break the game. In all the games I've DMd or played in over the past 3 years, I think it has been used only about 8 or 9 times, and 4 of them were by a monk who could burn Ki points to go into Dodge mode as a bonus action. Giving up an action to...

D&D 5E (2014) Running D&D for Brand Spanking New Players

When I DM for new people (especially a full group of new people), I try to get them to understand the essence of their PC (without the rules). For example, I ask them understand the ideas that make up their race, class, background, their ability strengths and weaknesses, but I make sure that...

D&D 5E (2014) Black bear: wrong attack bonus?

But also remember, monsters don't necessarily use the same methods of development as PCs. Therefore, make it any number you think works given that you can explain it as a unique creature that may be better or worse at combat. Not tying monster creation to pc creation is liberating and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with a were-creature bitten PC

When Chris Perkins was running his Dice, Camera, Action game, he had the PCs experience the PC's transformation, and restrain her. Later, they weren't as lucky and she escaped for a night. Eventually they found her all bloody and nearby they found a cave with the carnage of some dead child or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fun & Engaging House Rules

Exactly, I hate trying to decide when and if a player deserves an inspiration point.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fun & Engaging House Rules

Any time a player rolls a 20 on any check, save or attack, award an inspiration point. This makes rolling a 20 even cooler and it helps award inspiration (something I always forget to do).

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is the fastest-selling Dungeons & Dragons book of all time

And the audience for D&D has increased over the past 3 years so demand is up.

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is the fastest-selling Dungeons & Dragons book of all time

It does have a lot of playable content to be sure. Interestingly, I like it, bought a physical copy and bought it for Fantasy Grounds, but I don't have a burning desire to play any of the options in it...(well, maybe some of the rogue archetypes, but that's mostly because I love rogues). It...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ideas for adventures

You can add space western to that too...like Firefly/Serenity. You get character and adventure with conflict. (Although I hated the way the whole thing ended, but that might have been born of Joss Whedon's frustration and anger)

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] Your experience running monsters

I do all of the options at various times, but overall, I try to rp to make them more than just stats. Sometimes I modify their abilities or max hp for special individuals.

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 28 – Rictavio, Strange Happenings and a Strange New Place Our carriage continued west in the night as we tried to catch up to Rictavio. We came to an intersection and turned NW to go towards Van Richten’s Tower. In a few hours, we made it to a land bridge that jutted out into Lake...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running D&D 5e for Levels 10+

Totally! This is one of the reasons I'm glad there are no scaling bonuses automatically tied to AC. That said, I do like to alter creatures, but I do make sure that the description I give of them matches their increased prowess (like some will be bigger, stronger, faster, more agile, etc.).

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 27 – More time in Vallaki and A Night Ride to Van Richten’s Tower We prepared to go to tea at the Burgomaster’s since Syvrina was invited by Lydia. Syvrina called for a coach and had them put curtains over the windows. We all boarded the coach, Syvrina inside, and the rest of us...

D&D 5E (2014) Why penalize returning from death?

I'm posting late in this thread (and only read some of it...sorry)...but here's my idea for dealing with death. I know that players invest a lot of time and energy into developing their characters, and perma death is not for most. I like the idea that returning from death builds character in...

D&D 5E (2014) My Players defeated Strahd in one round and it was glorious! (CoS Spoilers inside)

It's so nice to hear how a quick victory after so much really is a thrill. The stars align when story and mechanics work together to create a satisfying conclusion.

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 26 – Syvrina’s back, but what’s up? I spoke with Syvrina for a little while. She looked pale, tired, though she was dressed well. She said she was tired and had the strangest dreams. I asked her what happened and she couldn’t remember anything. She didn’t even remember Ireena. She...

D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Just in case people want a resource for quickly modifying monsters with special abilities, etc, here's a list I worked on. I find it a handy thing to keep beside me when I DM so that I can pull a special power or two into the game for some of the elite foes...
