D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Great ideas. They all work, but to me, the most important aspect to solve rests/novas, etc. is to make sure nothing is predictable. Fear of the unknown is a great way to prevent unnecessary rests and keep players from unleashing all their resources.

D&D 5E (2014) Alternate Character Creation Idea for 5e Arrays with Perks

Thanks. I agree with you, but I've found the my players will never choose a prime score that isn't max so I'm experimenting.

D&D 5E (2014) Alternate Character Creation Idea for 5e Arrays with Perks

After reading a number of complaints about min/max attributes breaking some classes in 5e (whether it is true or not), and talking about character generation rolls vs. point buy vs. standard array in my own group, I'm starting to work on a new way to use arrays with Perks to make less cookie...

D&D 5E (2014) Wildshape check: am I doing it right?

Totally. Not that I mind. In our Phandelver campaign one of the players is a Moon Druid who turns into Dire Wolf form to combat (and to scout using his better sense of smell). He is a huge asset to our team, but seems too good levels 1-4. That said, our DM still almost TPKd us, so I'm happy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Challenge with a good group

Agreed. And use spellcasting foes. The CR for spellcasters that are protected by others skyrockets compared to the actual listed CR.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Question of Rest

This is exactly what I would say. I hate when players use rest as a recharge pill. I love when they feel character fatigue and decide to rest because it makes sense for the story. I also like when players try to conserve pc powers just in case, so having something left over means they were...

    D&D 5E (2014) Challenge with a good group

I agree with people who are advising you to avoid limitations. I like changes on the DM's side of the screen. My list is as follows: More focus on story and character development A true mixture of exploration, interaction and combat Unpredictable variety Terrain and environmental...

D&D 5E (2014) A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

I like the idea of rolling from Strength to Charisma in order to see what you get, but sometimes that generates too much diversity of power in a group. The only fair way that maintains balance in party, which I feel is really important over the long term, is through point buy or standard array...

    Chance to hit

Most lower level PCs only have +5 or +6 to hit. I'm missing plenty with my 4th level Bladesinger. At higher levels, maybe creatures don't miss as much, but they are usually fighting things that can take a lot of damage. I find it boring missing too much. When I played Pathfinder and 5e on...

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 25 – We Meet Fid and Continue to Vallaki With Yut gone, Brig, Bynn and I decided that it would be foolish to go back to the Bonegrinder to take on the hags. Although our hearts felt bad for the children, our survival took precedence so we traveled north towards where we thought Vallaki...

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

24 – Looking for Vistani and Esmeralda – Yut Goes Off the Deep End Before setting off for Vallaki like Ireena suggested, we decided to check in on Ireena to ask some more questions. When we got to her door, Brigby studied the runes more carefully, and we knocked. Ismark answered and told us...

    D&D 5E (2014) New DM Help

Hi DragonKnight88, Welcome to the boards! First and foremost, make sure you are providing lots of opportunity for exploration and interaction in addition to combat. Make the campaign about the entire world, story building and character development rather than just combat. You may be doing...

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 22 and 23 – Quick Exit from Krezk..on to Barovia…We lose a friend and learn of Strahd Before we left the gate guard, Yut asked if there was a curfew and if the town was safe at night. The guard said no curfew, but laughed about the safety. It was dark, we were tired, so we walked over...

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Yes, our DM has switched us into Curse of Strahd. It is very spooky. I like the change. We had another session tonight, but it's too late to write it up. I hope to get to it within a few days. It is amazing how different the two adventure worlds really are. So far, in Krezk and its...

    D&D 5E (2014) Awesome 5e Gaming Stories!

It is amazing how many stories come from unpredictable play. It is so incredible playing with players who have less preconceived notions about what should happen (i.e. the stories about the kids, etc.). I have a few good ones that happened over the past year. In one game, I ran a modified...

D&D 5E (2014) Lenora's Journal for Our Phandelver Campaign Transition into Curse of Strahd

Session 21 – We’re Not in Forgotten Realms Any Longer We rested inside the Rope Trick once more, keeping an eye out below to see if any of Nezzer’s forces were still pursuing us. We didn’t see any signs of trouble, but it was hard to see in the dark, even with darkvision. As the magic of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

True, but they didn't light up when Orcs where nearby. That's so D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

Weapons with names and magical powers ("Sting") The idea that a character could be hit with multiple weapon attacks and keep fighting (Boromir's end). Nobody mentioned Halflings yet. Yikes...the Hobbit.
