    Encumbrance

What about something like the mutant year zero system? Small items take up hard a slot Most items take 1 slot Big or heavy items take 2 slots You get a number of slots equal to your strength score Sword shield and plate? 5 slots used already. Spellbook and wand? 1.5 slots

D&D 5E (2014) Ability check DC based on level

I don't really scale with level for anything. Maybe that's just me being lazy. As for 5e DCs I take the numenera (I think?) Approach of ranking a difficulty 1 to 10 and then multiplying by 3. Gives me a bit more granularity to play with and my default moderate dc is 9 instead of 10.

    D&D 5E (2014) RIP alignment

I have never used alignment as it feels a bit simplistic to me. I tend to go by the attributes a la "the monsters know" style approach. Not just to combat, but in general.

D&D General Seeking DM Advice: Managing Extroverted Players

A lot of great advice and all I have is to agree with the above comments. Managing spotlight is one of the core aspects of being a GM in my opinion. Your games will be better for it. I definitely ask specific players what they are doing if I feel they haven't been able to participate much...

    D&D 5E (2014) Relative Difficulties of Advancing in 5e

I've....never thought of that. That's a really interesting idea I'll have to think about. Thanks!

    D&D 5E (2014) Relative Difficulties of Advancing in 5e

I think that's being hyperbolic. This edition plays very well at high levels.

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Ok if I were to change monks in a way that I think would give them a balanced power boost I would allow flurries and disengage on bonus action as not requiring ki points to spend. That allows a monk to still be pretty money and saves their ki points for stuns, dodges and subclass abilities.

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Thanks for clarifying. The monk is in an odd thematic place in D&D. I think it's always had a bit of an identity crisis that way.

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

I was asking a genuine question, not trying to challenge the poster. I'm also not invalidating anyones opinions. I'm merely trying to understand if this is a theory issue or a practical one. I also didn't just talk about fun in my post. The monk character is a genuinely useful contributor to...

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Agree. I really think this is a "monk on paper" vs a "monk in play" type of issue. Monks have to be one of the most versatile martial characters and there's always a tonne of decision points to be made in combat.

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Mind of tempest - have you played a monk? We often get threads bemoaning the monk here and I wonder how many have played it. I've played a monk from low levels to now level 17. A way of four elements monk even, which the Internet tells me should be a terrible experience. I have a tonne of fun...

D&D 5E (2014) WotC to increase releases per year?

Another thing I'd like to have (but others may not) is a genuine dedicated spellbook that contains all of the spells released to date plus new ones. As well as some gorgeous art of course. This dream book would also better balance the spells between the different schools of magic. No more...

    D&D 5E (2014) 3 Classic Settings Coming To 5E?

Excuse me, I believe they're called steamed hams!

D&D 5E (2014) Flanking, advantage, and opportunity attacks

If I were to g this route I'd prefer the +2 myself. It's a balancer between modifier creaap (a la 3e) and bonus dice creep. I feel in 5e we're more in the latter.

D&D 5E (2014) Flanking, advantage, and opportunity attacks

My rule is that firing into melee where allies are involved is -2 due to the scuffling and movement. I won't treat it like cover and so it doesn't get negated by sharpshooter.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC to increase releases per year?

I actually want more settings books about different areas of the forgotten realms. It gets a lot of flack for being generic, but pretty much everything released has centred on the sword coast, with a deviation to chult etc. Other than that, monsters. But monsters with cool legendary actions...

D&D 5E (2014) What if healing spells only created Temp HP?

Thanks for the tip. I'll look it up. For the sake of the thread, can you summarise?

D&D 5E (2014) What if healing spells only created Temp HP?

Thanks @dausappreciate your thoughts. point 3 and 4 are kind of intended consequences. It allows for anyone in the party to take on a healer role, which I kind of like. As for the others like heal for buffing, yeah that's what I would find interesting. I'd like to see how it changes PC...

D&D 5E (2014) What if healing spells only created Temp HP?

That's right. For campaign setting rules you have a lot of leeway as long as you're upfront a out it in your session 0

D&D 5E (2014) What if healing spells only created Temp HP?

Yeah that's the kind of approach I like. Most of the ideas I put up here I would only implement for a certain setting. Your idea is actually great for Barovia. How did the players respond to it? I imagine it helped add to the feeling of dread to the place.
