D&D 5E (2014) How would you improve monsters?

There's some great suggestions here, and I think I can only mirrir those that fit my preferences. A brief general tactics write up per monster A morale suggestion A couple of unique powers for each monster. This is the big one for me. Maybe an ogre should knock you back 10 feet on a club...

    D&D 5E (2014) Has D&D Combat Always Been Slow?

As the DM I found I was often the bottleneck to be honest. So here's what I do. (Note I'm running shadow of the demon lord, but it's transferrable). Monsters have a set attack and players roll defense. Roll20 already has an option for this, it helps the players feel like they are actively...

D&D 5E (2014) "The problem with 5e" is the best feature - advantage

@Ancalagon you've literally described the Shadow of the Demon Lord boons and banes system.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Saltiness

I agree in Barovia nearly everyone would be armed and/or armored in some way. For me, the disconnect would be in the guards taking exception to the player carrying a shield in such an obviously dangerous land.

D&D 5E (2014) Moving skills from Wisdom to Intelligence

You didn't really explain why you thought it was a bad idea. I feel like it would make INT much more tempting (and give value to players who choose to increase INT, not just wizards) while still leepong WIS a very important stat, due to the save.

D&D 5E (2014) Moving skills from Wisdom to Intelligence

A discussion on ability score balancing had me thinking of a houserule I'd be interested to try out. What if all current skills under wisdom were moved under intelligence (except for insight, which moved to charisma). Wisdom would then become the mental equivalent of CON, no skills but a very...

Here's What You Can Pre-Order For the DUNE RPG From Next Week

Wow! Those attreides and harkonnen books look amazing! I've been trying to stay away from physical books and now I find myself wanting to buy one of each...

    D&D General Active defenses

I've long wanted to write or houserule an action point system to give just that dark souls like experience. Then baulked at the effort and play testing it would require. A simple method would indeed be giving 3 action points at the start of your turn, and you can use all 3 or leave some in...

WotC Gale Force 9 Sues WotC [Updated]

I'm not sure why we're on this topic again, but RPGs are so cheap compared to other hobbies, and I can't see how people think differently. Tennis here i need to pay AUD200 minimum for a decent racket, and a similar amount for shoes to protect my ankles. Court hire is AUD20 per hour. Split with...

The Dune RPG Has A Cover!

I've read the 2d20 rules a few times, but it's never really sat well with me. I would have loved it if it it was produced in fria ligans YZ0 system. I think it would at the very least do a great job of capturing the lethality of Dune.

Savage Pathfinder Pathfinder Adventure Paths Are Coming To Savage Worlds!

I've played savage worlds a handful of times and loved it. I may be quite interested in this... I wouldn't worry about the "swingyness" of combat as there's a ton of dials for this. If they want to capture that high level high HP feel there'll be options, like new soak mexhanics, extra wounds...

D&D 5E (2014) It's official, WOTC hates Rangers (Tasha's version of Favored Foe is GARBAGE)

I agree that hunters mark should have always been a class feature, not a spell. It's not trash entirely. The benefit at least is that a ranger can start using spell slots for things other than hunters mark.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D needs Mouseguard/BW style Goals etc.

A lot of PbtA games focus XP on a combination of campaign goals and character goals. Essentially they form a checklist you go over at the end of the session and if one of the points was achieved, the PC gets XP for it. I have tried this in a group and found it worked really well. It kept fresh...

    D&D 5E (2014) Capping Hit Points

Well let's take a hack at it. Structure = CON score Blood = CON score Shock = hitpoints Piercing/slashing and most elemental damage types can be elected to do damage as shock, or damage/10 to blood (non lethal vs lethal) Bludgeoning, force, thunder and poison can elect to do damage as shock...

    D&D 5E (2014) Capping Hit Points

What if you rebranded hit points as shock and saved some of them as blood? So initial hits cause shock to the PC but can be restored on a rest. Blood loss takes longer to heal and when at 0 the PC falls unconscious and is bleeding out.

D&D General Hit Point alternate to + CON mod?

While we're on it, I think Survival should be tied to CON by default.

D&D General Hit Point alternate to + CON mod?

I absolutely like this approach due to a slight front load on survivability at 1st level. It also sits well with my meat/non meat scale as any damage to CON are physical wounds that I would allow to heal only 1 per day, and hit points are luck/stamina that are recovered on a rest.

D&D General Hit Point alternate to + CON mod?

I love this idea but it'd never happen. I guess that's why I play SotDL..
