INTO THE MOTHERLANDS Publisher Cancels Plans

I'm the kind of person that really wants to see alternative world settings (one reason I'm a backer of Kalymba) rather than a rehash of some faux western feudal europe society, but I saw the red flags immediately. That they didn't even decide what system they would use or develop by time of...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Reveals New Golden Vault Details

Mark me as someone not enthused. Yes you can run a heist in D&D, you could run a dinner party in D&D. However other systems can give you so many more interesting options for heists IMO, frex: Mission clocks in The Sprawl, flashbacks in BitD, astral security in Shadowrun, investigative skills...

D&D 5E (2024) Should healing word require hit dice?

I think that just makes healing even more complicated in D&D. If I were running 5e I would use negative hit points, and the PC does not become conscious unless they get to 1 HP. Rather than making healing word more costly to use, it makes all healing spells roughly the same utility if they are...

Not DnD - Shadow of the Weird Wizard with Rob Schwalb

Really pleased to see more adventure paths planned for SotWW. Indovidual adventures are ok for one shots, bug stringing together 11 for a full campaign can end up being a ton of work.

Pirate Borg -- any of you scurvy dogs have it?

I've been reading over my copy in the last few days. It's one of the few books I like to have a physical copy of. The art, layout and design of the book is wonderful, the writing style lights my imagination up with adventure ideas and the naval combat looks really fun. I'll hope to try it out...

Pirate Borg -- any of you scurvy dogs have it?

The Dark Carribean (where it is set) is being overrun by undead and monsters of the deep. Inevitably they will take over the whole area and there's no way to stop them.

What's the problem with five room dungeons?

I think some people must take it literally like that. My understanding was it came from the psychological studies suggesting most people can store 3-7 blocks of information in their working memory at a time. In any case, it's just a guideline to aid in design. If someone is tired of it, they...

What's the problem with five room dungeons?

It's just another made up controversy by someons thinking too much about one topic. If you really need to update it, you could make it a "5 +/- 2 room dungeon"

I really don't think it should be called the "ORC license"

To put another voice in the chamber, i like the name of ORC. It's simple, catchy and evocative of RPGs as a vast majority are fantasy themed. As a marketing tactic it works well. I don't think 99% of people who watch lord of the rings, play warcraft or d&d connect orcs with racism. And even if...

WotC Unveils Draft of New Open Gaming License

While i don't know the split, estimates i've seen of 10% max pf Wotc's revenue sounds plausible. So d&d is not insignificant, but it's not a core product (financially speaking) to the business. So if d&d sales drop 25%, the truth is shareholders would barely notice the change in their share price.

news scoop: insider account of how the statement was drafted, and the fear-based culture in Wizards offices

I've since read mod messages and in the interest of cooling heads and getting back on thread I won't engage in any discussion on Enworlds mission. However yes it's not surprising the culture of wotc is like that. Especially in an organisation which people get into some measure of power, but not...

Player Engagement Outside of Session Time

I think a lot of us are much more tired and more is demanded of us thab we realise. I have many obligations and duties in work and family life that gaming prep becomes just another chore to do. I might enjoy it, but the energy simply isn't there. I find this much different when you are playing...

    A Review of Blade Runner

I really like the campaign structure and would love to run a police procedural with it. I love that the days are structured and that events will occur on certain days independent of the players. It helps to give the world a lived in feel IMO and it's the first system I've seen that truly...

    TTRPG Alternative Systems

I don't know how the particularities of it works out, but I think Rob schwalb's Disciples of the Demon Lord licence seems quite open.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5e vs Oe Cleric...

I keep sounding like a shill, but Rob Schwalb did this years ago with shadow of the Demon Lord, and he wasn't the first. So it's hardly new. He worked on 5e as well so I presume it's an idea they discussed during it's initial development.

Fantasy France - what would it have?

Joan of Arc RPG has some really good setting details around 15th century France, particularly in Burgundy. I'd recommend it.

Fantasy France - what would it have?

It's true. I lived in Lyon and fit right in. In Paris I always felt like I was being judged.

    D&D 5E (2024) Gain 1 exhaustion when dropping to 0hp?

My preference with the new rules would be to regain all exhaustion, but only half hp on a long rest. Then liberally sprinkle exhaustion all over the place!
