In Search of the World of Greyhawk

Great find! I must have gotten a later printing as I never found that reference! Thanks!

In Search of the World of Greyhawk

That's correct: In Search of the Unknown was published in 1979 and the D&D Expert Set can be dated 1981 (Cook) or 1983 (Mentzer) as you mention. Of course I don't know what was in the author's mind, but the first (and only, as far as I know) time that it was officially placed in a world setting...

In Search of the World of Greyhawk

Happy to help! :) Please chech out the map: it is an official map published by TSR as part of the Blue Box, i.e. canon. Have a close look at the Grand Duchy of Karameikos: you will find a spot marked "B1" that is the canon place where this adventure is placed, together with other adventures...

    Need some ideas

The answer to all your need is just one and it's very simple! It is called module DA2: The Temple of the Frog. A superclassic adventure by Dave Arneson, one of the fathers of D&D. Enjoy it!

In Search of the World of Greyhawk

Just for completion: In Search of the Unknown is an adventure officially set in the world of Mystara (the Known World of the Red / Blue Box). Recenty I haven't seen many references to this very old setting, that is integral part of the story of RPGs and deserves to be respectfully remembered. ;)

Comfort withcross gender characters based on your gender

You are confusing GMs and players. They are not necessarily the same things and sometimes, as the GM ages, the players perhaps not, as you don't GM all your life for the same persons.

Comfort withcross gender characters based on your gender

While GMing (for about 35 years...) I have the impression that, the more time passes, the more players are comfortable with roleplaying characters of their opposite gender... and they roleplay them well, independently from their player gender.

[Play by post] Living Force: Cularin! (Star Wars Saga Edition)

Today is the Force Day, MAY THE 4TH (BE WITH YOU), the perfect time of the year to launch this game! This game is made of multiple short adventures (typically for 4-6 characters, each of them designed to take approx 3-4 hours in real time play). Rather than a classic, linear campaign, it is a...

Cultures in D&D/roleplaying: damned if you do, damned if you don't

Well, his experience is that he tried hard being realistic and adherent to history during his Napoleonic battles, but eventually he grew bored and choose to create a new world where you don't need to justify each single detail. This new world wasn't boring even after many decades playing in it.

Cultures in D&D/roleplaying: damned if you do, damned if you don't

Dave Arneson had exactly the same doubt and this is how he reminds sorting out the conundrum, so I won't add a single word: (Orlando, 2004)

    What is *worldbuilding* for?

I'm quite fond of classic D&D puzzles, so I can see your point about dungeons, but I suggest you to have a proper look at the really classic D&D dungeons that became the prototype of them all: have a proper look at Castle Blackmoor (First Fantasy Campaign), or at the Temple of the Frog (DA2)...

    Your favorite in-game D&D organization

I like the Brotherhood of the Radiance, in Glantry, Mystara. I like the fact that it is an overpowered, but higly secret organization (Rad himself is part of it!) but at the same time it brings a lot of danger (Radiance disease, possible assassination between Brothers, it is an illegal...

Lovely article! I'd mention also the gamebooks that allow solo games, like Tunnels & Trolls and Fighting Fantasy, for example.
