Depends on the nature of the kit. If you’re using nonmagical components, use Medicine or perhaps Survival. If it is magical, then use Arcana.

Personally believe we do need them. Heck, i believe we need more, and i would say there’s enough interest in high/epic level play to justify rule set being built around them.

The easiest way i can think of is ammunition. Many tables dont keep track of nonmagical ammo, but for those that do, the sling is great because even when you run out, chances are that there will be a small rock or two within reach.
