Foundry VTT Responds to OGL 1.2 Draft

Don't forget the only IP they're allowing is under the EXTREMELY expensive terms available ONLY on dmsguild[onebookshelf] and costs creators 50% of their revenue as it is now. The newer OGL they're proposing actually tones that back--that is, until they change it next. But if you just super...

Foundry VTT Responds to OGL 1.2 Draft

But that's exactly what they appear to be doing--squashing these "competitors" that are not really competitors at all. Nobody said it made sense, we can only go by what we've seen WoTC doing.

Foundry VTT Responds to OGL 1.2 Draft

Even the legal victory WoTC so desperately hopes to win, dubious though it may be, would still be an entirely pyhhric one at this point. WoTC don't seem to have much open community left (and dwindling fast) with whom to argue about new licensing terms. A legal failure on this is starting to look...

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

Don't be shocked if you see some 3pp's (maybe a lot) band together and kickstart/humble bundle some kind of fundraiser for a unified legal defense fund and agree to go about their legal actions corporately by consensus. Soon.

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

That rumor is coming from people who appear to be in the know and claim to know Chris Whateverhisnameis' M.O. and past behavior. Assuming that applies to upcoming WoTC/D&D plans.

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

If they were exiting the industry they shouldn't care about OGL? (which would be fine with me--I was always fine, before this bad faith/bad actor stuff, with dndone being a video game. I might have even tried it if the price was reasonable, but also continue TTRPG's as a separate thing). It...

Maybe in a sense but s/he is right to put it in the past tense.

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

And what did they tell those 1500 3pp's when they "realized" they actually "could" "deauthorize" OGL1.0a? The ones they were courting with the text you see here to do... exactly what they did... and now are being metaphorically threatened at gunpoint with demands to comply, halt operations, or...

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

100% correct, which is why there are some 3pps and interested parties gathering to form a unified group preparing corporately for a potential future legal battle.

    Salient. Again... New Coke.

Unfortunately, if we've learned anything in the 21st century so far, it's that clearly nobody has to look at things rationally. :(

    Boycott Kickstarter

Jeepers! There's another service (can't remember the name) that popped up recently that are putting a lot of effort into propping up indie TTRPG efforts. The cut that KS takes coupled with their agreement to abide by the new OGL will probably just push most or all 3pp's to another platform, and...

Well, that's not entirely true.... but nowhere near as much as any of the established publishers. All I've lost is time. All I have to do is remove the OGL and strip out any SRD language, and rewrite the whole system from the ground up; this whole debacle has set my project back at least a year...

I understand that completely. I'll do my best to wrap my head around it.

So enlighten us. You're the expert anyway, my layperson understanding probably couldn't process all the lack of similarities without having it broken down into plain language by an expert. This is not sarcasm, although I could see where it might be misconstrued as such. I actually want to hear...

    Don't Give Ground

I'm no lawyer so don't take my word as authoritative. Just expressing my thoughts and feelings. Obviously nobody really knows. My understanding from some software industry people who claim to know what they're talking about is that they believe they already know where this is headed and how it...

It's all about timing. If I were a trader, I'd be poising myself to buy hasbro, although I'd wait for it to hit where I think is going to be rock bottom. Guessing is the fun part! Or if you had some inside info that this was coming, you could short sell all your hasbro. But I guess that's not...
