WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

It certainly seems safe to assume that a competent megacorp would have their legal ducks in a row before embarking on this journey they’ve assigned to themselves. It also seems like they could remember the history of 2008-2012 et. Al.. but here we are 🤪

^ I would tend to recommend the same. My opinions on the open gaming license in the legality of revoking it come from a few different sources, one is the people who wrote it. Two is wizards of the coast themselves. Three is a lawyer named Tarantino who Wrote his PhD dissertation on open gaming...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Right, and my not at all professional understanding is that precedent of rolling back open licenses exists in the software world, but it could always be decided that that does not apply to analog gaming. If that counts as precedent, it’s pretty much a slam dunk that there’s no possible way OGL...

D&D General Forgive the vaguepost but I'm cautiously excited

Can't say much but I just moments ago submitted my very first professionally contracted dnd thingy. Now I just have to hope that the production doesn't evaporate, or that my submission doesn't get laughed out of the book. Wish me luck. 🤣

Yeah, one of the things that's so crazy about this whole hurricane is how profoundly unnecessary all this was.

Do you know why the textile industry wants children working on manufacturing clothes? It's because they can reach their hands into the machines without having to turn them off. Best

If people go around suing publishers for using CC material it weakens the point of CC, with producers losing confidence in the safety using the material. Kinda like, you know... trying to revoke OGL 1.0a... :ROFLMAO: :p

They most definitely were going up against someone, friendo. They've backed down, for now. Until I see the architects of this course of action kicked to the curb, I'll assume the motivation remains.

There's a $25,000 fine if the lawsuit is deemed frivolous: Frivolous litigation - Wikipedia I believe contempt of court is a possibility, not totally sure on that one though.

Bud, it's not revocable. No matter how contorted your twist your tongue into linguistic acrobatics. We all have know what the deal was, for nearly a quarter of a century. LOL

In my opinion absolutely yes, motives very much matter just on principle but in a more immediate, concrete way too: If they still want to, they'll be looking for a way to try. Maybe a different attack vector but shooting for the same result.

Whatever imperfect choice of words with which I may carelessly have mislead you to believe otherwise, I am always just speaking for myself. Unless someone elects me as their representative, which so far, they have not. I do not always choose the best possible words. But you can always assume...

No way, man, no way. That's some salient wordcraft. D&D is EXACTLY like the one ring, and it's bearer inevitably gets corrupted. At least that's the way it seems.

Yeah, could 100% be a double edged sword. But on the other hand, community cooperativeness may not be necessary in a healthfully diversified polyculture. There would be just too many facets to kill the whole thing in one go. Someone might get one or two groups, but there's still 1500 more after...

Generally speaking in life Monocultures are bad, susceptible to disease, corruption, decay, and destruction. Polycultures that have diversified are much harder to affect en masse. You might get one or two groups, but there's still 2000 more...
