    Resolutions for the Fantasy Hero

The problem of what to do with unconscious enemies is a recurring moral quandary in many RPG's. Many groups just kill them and move on, which is perfectly fine if that is the kind of game the player's, and DM, want to run. But, if you are in a game where the PC's are 'heroes' and expected to...

    D&D = American + European Fantasy

Vance also had a huge impact. A magic system that was inherently limited is different than many of the European stories that came before. Gandalf or Merlyn, for example, rarely seemed limited in the magics they could cast. Another nod to having to 'earn your way' to power and riches inherent...

Tink-Tink-Boom vs. the Death Spiral: The Damage Mechanic in RPGs

On the flip side, you had Twilight 2000. If your character took a serious wound, it would take them months to recover. If they were lucky, you left them in a friendly village. In a combat heavy campaign, you ended up playing your way through an entire platoon!

Tink-Tink-Boom vs. the Death Spiral: The Damage Mechanic in RPGs

regarding falling damage...EGG originally intended falling damage to be 1d6 per 10' cumulative (Dragon #69). That amounts to 10'=1d6, 20'=3d6, 30'=6d6, etc. We played it that way for years, and it seemed much more realistic and made falling a real threat!

    Conventions All Report Record Attendance

There are sales figures in some of the court filings, and if someone had the inclination they could probably figure it out based on PHB/Basic Set numbers. Personally, I think D&D is way bigger now. I went to high school in the early 80's and out of about 1000 students, I think there were...

News Digest: Starfinder Beginner's Box, The Late Show D&D Segment, Several Big "Miniatures" Announce

Colbert has serious nerd cred. Do a YouTube search for his segments on Tolkien. The dude is a walking Tolkien encyclopedia!

News Digest: Starfinder Beginner's Box, The Late Show D&D Segment, Several Big "Miniatures" Announce

Best part of the Colbert interview, when Joe mentions the current method of rolling ability scores is 4d6 drop the lowest and arrange how you like, Colbert says "5d6? That's for children!" lol I guess Colbert hasn't played since college, but I would love to see him on Critical Role at some...

    Dragon Reflections #7 – Who Invented D&D?

I actually enjoy reading about the ones before I started my subscription. Once we hit 48, I already know what was in them! lol

    Season 8 Changes (Adventurers League)

What was wrong with the trading rules? 15 downtime days to trade an item unless you are at the same table and they must be of the same rarity. Any less would lead to massive exploits and anything more is probably unnecessary. Sure there is some wonkiness going on with certificates and unique...

Dragon Reflections #6: A Star (Trek) is Born

I am loving this series. I don't mind going in order. It shows the development of the magazine over time. I didn't start reading until #48 and only got back issues to #45, so all the early ones are brand new for me!

WotC D&D's Best Year Ever - But Hasbro's Goal Is For D&D e-Sports

And, as I am sure you already know, many early D&D players came from wargaming backgrounds, so they were heavily into competition. That faded over time as the base expanded. How many competition modules have you played in recently? Gary Con had a competition AL event last year. Before that...

WotC D&D's Best Year Ever - But Hasbro's Goal Is For D&D e-Sports

It sounds like someone who is just trying to repeat things other people have told him without fully understanding all the concepts involved. I am willing to bet he has very little idea what D&D gameplay is actually like. He groups MtG and D&D together and then makes broad statements concerning...

    When D&D Was a Toy

Ironically, the artwork was done by a teenage girl! Tim Kask talked about in an interview that is posted on youtube.

Dragon Reflections #5: Charting New Directions

I still have my copy of Starship Troopers on my shelf! I am surprised to see it on the list. It is a board game with a pretty straightforward rule set, I am not sure what contributions they expected. It does have pre-defined scenario's, so I guess people could have submitted new ones. Still...

    An Army in the Dungeon

Back in 2nd edition, I had a monk who used his followers like the Blood Guard from the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series. There were 100% loyal and would lay down their lives on his command. Much of their tasks took place outside the actual adventures. For example, I would assign them to...

Session time and level advancement (ie, how many hours gametime for a level)

I am assuming that was AD&D? Leveling in AD&D was MUCH more slow that subsequent editions. My highest AD&D character was level 13 and that was after playing weekly 8-hour sessions for 4 years during college (approx. 1600 hours). For comparison, the checkpoint system in XGtE will get you to 13...

    D&D 5E (2024) 6e? Why?

There are portions of 5e that could benefit from a new version. The ones that come to mind are: Grappling, vision, rest/encounters per day and, of course, the overpowered GWM and SS feats. They don't make the game unplayable by any means, but I do find the above to be the weakest part of 5e...

Session time and level advancement (ie, how many hours gametime for a level)

I have one group that plays monthly, each session 6-8 hours. Given how infrequently we play, I have essentially gone to a milestone'ish system. Each adventure they get 1/3-1/2 of the experience needed for the next level. Given how infrequently we play, I wanted the PC's to be able to advance...

Graph Paper Romance: When D&D Characters Date

We discussed something similar recently on our podcast "The Grognards". Instead we talked about how it can be very awkward when a DM and Player become romantically involved (or the romance ends). It is part of the "Too Taboo for Tabletop" episode.

    Dragon Reflections #3: Controversy Strikes!

It looks like a type and should be "1 8-sided die and 1 6-sided die" There is also a type in the average statement with two "NOT"'s. Plus the average is 7-9 using their wonky method, not 7-10 lol. We have come a long way!
