    D&D 5E (2024) How is Flex still a thing?

5E is easy enough where you can wander around in padded armor, with a turkey drumstick as your weapon, and spend half your rounds eating it, and no one's going to die. That's a pretty low bar to clear.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest Packet 6: Monk reactions?

Still fairly unimpressive. They really only have 1 class feature at first level, since unarmored defense and martial arts are just armor/weapon proficiency by another name. 2/3 are used just to equal the baseline of "having equipment". Can you imagine a class whose starting features were "has...

    D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

Nice to see the monk still pays a feature tax to function. Unarmored Defense isn't a meaningful class feature, it's a fluffed form of armor proficiency. Martial arts barely qualifies as well. Two of their three starting class features bring them up to the default level of "dude with a stick and...

D&D 5E (2024) Wild shape? Was the 3.5e PHB2, Shapeshift variant the best wild shape to date?

Big no to adding proficiency to AC. Why does the full caster get to be a better tank than a non-caster? Honestly, I'd prefer no wild shape without spell expenditure, and each form is a spell, upcast for bigger bonuses. Make a shifter class that can take form add-ons in an ala carte manner...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

No one is "combat all day long". I have never, in 30+ years of gaming, seen an unlimited encounter day. The spellcasters drive rests. You rest when the characters with meaningful resources are low. And even if you didn't fighters dont have unlimited HP. But lets say they did... being ready for a...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

D&D could actually have degrees of success. Hit by 5+ trigger X, hit by 10+ trigger X or Y, etc. The number would need to go up to account for a bigger range of outcomes, but frankly I'm tired of bounded accuracy's Harrison Bergeron effect, where no one is allowed to be exceptional because we...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

Anyone can "think of a solution". Including casters, who also get additional options that just work.

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

Of course vets like the champion. It's designed for people who don't want to think about the game part of the game, and D&D has long cultivated the attitude of "if you don't want to think about the game, play a fighter". It's circular. Its designed for the old school grognards who didnt care...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

In your game, my rogue wants to walk up to a guard and hypnotize them to sleep in a round. What is the check? Since we can improv anything, copying a simple Sleep spell for one target should be pretty easy, right? It's single target, close range, so should be better than actually casting a sleep...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

LOL. 5E fighters don't even get abilities they had in 4E. Where's my Come and Get it? Gated behind DM whim, that's where. Fighters have dick for narrative abilities compared to spellcasters. Everything is at the discretion of the DM, compared to spells, which are "DM This Happens" abilities...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

That's because anyone who wanted a cool martial left to play another game, so the martial players that are left either simply don't care about the game aspect or have some weird impotence fantasy where they want to play a town guard +1 alongside Dr. Strange. The people who like the current...

    D&D 5E (2024) Class Exclusive spells

He and the other designers, intentionally made certain options under/overpowered. Some were blatantly crappy, others deceptively bad trap options. The concept was "system mastery", where you'd learn to avoid the noob traps and pick the overpowered options as a reward for being a good little nerd...

    D&D 5E (2024) Class Exclusive spells

3e started off intentionally unbalanced as part of its system mastery gatekeeping nonsense. Monte Cook intentionally poisoned the well from day one.

    D&D 5E (2024) Class Exclusive spells

Exclusive spells are how you make the half casters combat spells not hot garbage when they get them.

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

Countered by my experience. They have squat for narrative plot coupons, spells handle everything that skills can do, and casters get skills as well. Keeping low level slots relevant with utility means even more slots to spam to make sure they continue to be the ones in the spotlight...

D&D 5E (2024) Fix for the Druid's Wildshape: A limited number of beasts

Make the shifter as the real shapeshifting class rather than change what the druid has been for 5 editions - a full caster. I do think it would be hugely popular. One of my first time players wanted to be a shapeshifter and was irritated they had to learn spells rather than just being Beast Boy...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

I'd be fine with casters capping out at 3 spells total (1 highest, 2 next highest level), with partial recovery 1-2 times a day. As is, it's simply too much. The game has completely devolved into all casters, all the time. Casters power needs to be dropped dramatically, as it has been made...

D&D 5E (2024) Fix for the Druid's Wildshape: A limited number of beasts

The class that is a 9 level spellcaster shouldn't be able to also go all in on shapeshifter. The 2014 moon druid is fine for a non-caster. It's ludicrous on a full caster and needed to be nerfed into oblivion. Druid shapeshifting should be a set number of spells with specific adaptations and...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

Yes they should. Keeping low level utility/debuff/buff spells relevant is part of the quadratic wizard problem. Spellcasters have too many spell slots period, and reaction spells like shield/silvery barbs allow them to nova even faster on low encounter days.
