D&D 5E (2014) Monsters taking PC classes: I want it in Next.

Nah. The game was broken by a lazy, unskilled DM (who is also potentially ignorant with respect to the magnitude of the proposed task, as well as dungeon design) that decided to have lazy, unresponsive, inactive dungeon residents who let a party perform a major construction project (a dam or...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Just another nit to pick (seven or so days and several pages late): There are (to my knowledge) no "mindless" or "spell-immune" creatures in 4e. Golems and "mindless" undead have low intelligence and charisma, but all the actual creatures have at least some score. Objects, on the other hand...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

I think this is referring to the power posted by Manbearcat, "Get Over Here." Perhaps this was cleared up in the intervening days and posts, but I thought I'd chime in, anyway. That is pretty explicitly a "grab your friend and move him around you" power. It has a range of "Melee 1;" That with...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Apropos of nothing relating to the thread at large, but this strikes me as odd, given that the 4e Bard powers are all explicitly spells, and would -- I tend to think -- have the same exclusion from the requirement for a believable rationale as is normally afforded to wizard, sorcerer, warlock...

    Monks Using On Hit Weapons

Right on the first count, but the second depends on the range of the power. It is quite possible to have a melee implement power, as many of the Monk's are. You are still hitting with a melee power with the weapon, even if it is a (melee) implement power. At least, that's how I read it. :)

    Monks Using On Hit Weapons

I agree with your assessment, Trit. The "Hit" powers and properties on items really don't have anything to do with the Weapon and Implement keywords, just with whether or not the item was used and the power with which it was used hit or not. Edit to add: Monks are explicitly proficient with two...

New playtest and feats...did I miss something?

Prerequisites None of the prerequisites seemed arduous enough to warrant changing, to me. The ones that have them are mostly an 11 in some relevant attribute. The only two hold-outs are the Guardian and the Necromancer. The Guardian gives "shield tricks" as its schtick, so the prerequisite of...

    D&D Next Q&A 9 August

What is this "critical failure" of which you speak? I mean sure, you can add a house rule for critical failures, and I think it might have been an optional rule discussed in one of the sidebars (p. 28 of one of the DMGs, apparently; it comes with a lot of cautions, even then), but core 3.x...

Combining Monster Roles - or doing things you shouldn't do

True (regarding the unhinged/blinded), but you asked why they wouldn't go ahead and transform long prior to the encounter, so I endeavored to create some reasons, both RP (unpleasantness/risk of life) and mechanical (losing their hit points to represent a painful/fatiguing transformation). The...

Combining Monster Roles - or doing things you shouldn't do

A couple things, perhaps. The first is that it is likely not a pleasant thing, to be possessed by a demon. Another might be out of a sense of self-preservation; the demon possessing you will rush into battle, not caring about your life at all, so it might be something that is done only when...

Combining Monster Roles - or doing things you shouldn't do

For the most part, I'd stat the transforming cultists as pure brutes with an encounter (or recharge) power that can be used as part of a charge. That simulates the speed of that initial rush when they first engage you. If you feel that they must be fast, give the demon form a base land speed of...

CB error or am I missing something?

Bug Report It In the current state of the online character builder, the Monk Unarmed Strike (or whatever it's called) does not exist as a purchasable weapon, but rather as a class feature. It now resides solely as a class feature. From what I found via online research, you can't buy a second...

    Dungeon brain-teasers

I'm a pretty big fan of these types of challenges in general, and I've thought of how to work this sort of thing in campaigns I've DMed, but I often run into stumbling blocks when I consider using the puzzles. The justification for their use, as mentioned by Will Doyle is vital. They make very...

    Companion Characters as PCs

Simplicity is often attractive to new players (assuming either "new to 4e" or "new to D&D/RPGs" and not just "new to your group), but that might not be the only turn-off. With a 7th level character, you are dealing with at least the following powers: two (or three) at-wills, three encounters...

    Leveling up and Ability Scores/Modifiers

Ability Score vs. Modifier vs. Check Modifier Your ability score only goes up if you put points into it at one of the levels where you have that choice. That's levels 4, 8, 14, 18, 24, and 28. all of them also go up automatically at the new tier levels (11 and 21). Assuming you don't put any...

D&D 5E (2014) The Door, Player Expectations, and why 5e can't unify the fanbase.

With all the same caveats from before (reading the myths was a long time ago and whatnot), I took the crone to be old age in the same basic sense that (pulling from several mythologies) Thor is thunder, Ares is war, Shu is air/the sky, Mystra is magic, or Pelor is the sun. That is to say, it was...

D&D 5E (2014) The Door, Player Expectations, and why 5e can't unify the fanbase.

Utgard-loki Since you've used it twice, I figured I'd chime in with the well-known explanation in the myth itself that this was an illusion created by Utgard-loki, a magical giant. He placed the illusion that it was his cat (small to a giant, not to Thor -- at least according to the versions I...

    Stats scaling past 18/19

Fighters only make choices only two times. At creation/leveling and in the moment. Wizards and clerics make choices three times. At creation/leveling, in the moment, and at the beginning of each day. That's a clear advantage for the caster. (Note that I consider gear acquisition part of...

D&D 5E (2014) The Door, Player Expectations, and why 5e can't unify the fanbase.

Regarding the last paragraph, you are absolutely right (barring, of course, things like stoneskin and other protections). I would love more discussion regarding the first bit, though, as I am not sure what you are saying. (I don't have much experience with modules or pregens, just with the...
