D&D 5E (2014) Building out backstory for a neophyte player

What cools Fire better than water? They decided to broaden their horizons, spread across a sea or river which previously marked the edge of their territory. The gods feared their passage, and threw an endless tirade of threats against the tribe, storms and monsters nearly killing them to a man...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best of the 5e Forum

This is some good stuff. Cannot think of any immediate additions, as you hit on most of the threads I have checked out for tips. I did have a thread going for random encounters. It has been dead for a short while, but there were some good ones in there.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition quickstart guide for 3rd edition GMs

You forgot to mention what inspiration does. As I understand, the Dis/Advantage mechanic will be new to these people, right?

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Returns to Monthly With Some Revised Subclasses

Flurry of Blows is 2 unarmed attacks, so it would be 1d10+dex mod, and two 1d4+dex mod attacks.

D&D 5E (2014) What sorts of things are you working on? (3PP or personal use homebrew)?

As far as I can tell, "What has been working" is that the system is so customizable. So, you really are enjoying it exactly as it is meant to be enjoyed by continuing to do what you do. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Crafting poison

I like the basic idea for this type of thing of having two ingredients, a dry and a wet. You need enough wet to make the dry into a paste, so Spider venom would take a bit of time to make usable. I would allow the player to visit Apothecary shops and such, since a lot of venemous things also...

D&D 5E (2014) IDEA: International Dialects of English Archive, what do you use?

So, I was watching a video on Youtube, a fireside chat with Mathew Mercer, and he mentioned the IDEA at one point. I thought it might be interesting to bring it on here, and see what people use. http://www.dialectsarchive.com/globalmap What dialects do the races in your world use? Where, on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

Awesome. I love when things beak away from the classic cliches. Elves in my world will be the ones with a Scottish accent, but it will be the softer Conversational scottish, rather than the screaming "OH AYE, AYE'L AXE YER FACE BUT GUUD LIDDLE LADDY!"

D&D 5E (2014) What sorts of things are you working on? (3PP or personal use homebrew)?

Just thought I would update, I have since added Druid homebrewing to my list. Also, not in a thread, I am working on a non-magical alchemist style class. My first actual Homebrew Class, it is inspired by Lockwood and Co., which will be one of the subclasses if anyone is interested in that.

    D&D 5E (2014) I Was Wrong!!!!!

I do agree that they should have more fluff to help with styles of Monk outside of Kung-fu eastern monks, like an MMA style pit fighter. The monk itself though, I love the mechanics of. Flexible, mobile, enough damage to not be a detriment to the party. Also able to scout in ways the rogue can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

That just says, to me, that the enemy rolled a higher stealth than both the Soldiers passive perception and their perception check. Same result on a different side of the equation I guess. I feel like it is more realistic to attribute a successful ambush to skill on the part of the attacker...

    D&D 5E (2014) Eversmoking Bottle Question

Wow, that would be horrible in a cramped dungeon. What were the rules for suffocation from smoke?

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

I was tired when I wrote that, I should have picked something less adversarial. Here is a better wording, it is good for groups that like less Arbitrary decisions on the part of the DM. My main issue (issue meaning a personal point of view, not that I think you are wrong) with your second...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Ideas on making a trade/skill for magical tattoos

Magic item crafting would be your best bet I think. Here are the stages I would have. 1) Find Magic-harnessing-crystal or gem. Anything from Quartz to a Diamond will work, with the bonus being that better gems can hold stronger creatures. 2) Cast a Binding or Domination spell into the gem. 3)...

D&D 5E (2014) Converting Druid to Warlock Chassis

More good thoughts. Glad I came here for help, as the only Class I have thought less about than the Cleric is the Druid. I generally wouldn't know the first thing to do with it, but am liking the general direction this is leading in. I will need to settle on a track eventually, but until then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

Passive scores serve as an excellent way to tell if something is in doubt or not, without the players feeling like the DM might have screwed them out of what should have been a sure stealth mission. It is just a different way to decide what the floor is for "isn't in doubt".

    D&D 5E (2014) homebrew Cleric Changes discussion

My world has a separate force, Chaos, that tends to lace itself into all sorts of things. A village might have a Chaos Blight on their wheat for example, making it immune to a simple restoration by way of being ever changing. It would probably just evolve during the Restoration. The same sort of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

It isn't hyperbole, the first and last quotes were actual ones I have seen on Critical Role. Unless you were talking about Hyperbole on their part, in which case I can agree. I wasn't looking to challenge anyone's legitimacy of Opinion, just genuinely stating a thought I had. I know that some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

I wonder if one of the reasons the idea of Passive being a minimum is getting push-back is because some people like to Fumble, or like their players to fumble things. Watching Critical Role, the players will often roll a die, and immediately say "Nope, I don't see anything", at which point they...

D&D 5E (2014) Converting Druid to Warlock Chassis

Ooh, that's interesting. I could then have Invocations that add different things, like advantage on medicine checks for the Forest Druid, and creatures inside his aura, as it "strengthens the healing power naturally found in herbs". That is definitely on the drawing board.
