D&D 5E (2014) Pros and cons of a sandbox game, and what to do about them?

I plan to shamelessly take advantage of this community's wisdom and knowledge, so I have some basic questions with complicated answers. I will be running a game for new players, and after some time teaching them the rules I plan to kick it off in my own world as a sandbox game. What are the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford's 9 D&D "Hacks"

Nah, I don't see any problems with your rolls. Very consistent and across the board, if you were rolling a d4 for initiative.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me grok mega-dungeons

Not much to add, you managed to hit all the important bits.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me grok mega-dungeons

No, I was not. Looks fairly similar to my idea, though a bit more malevolent. Since I last posted in my thread on it, I have decided for sure that it will be a Security system/test for a secret society of magic users, so no leaving its post to hunt for people the PCs love.

D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the Hermaphrodites???

I actually like this a lot. I might steal this for my world.

D&D 5E (2014) My tweak to make (Champion) Fighters decent

Well, there are all the times you have said that a DM not enforcing the 6-8 encounters at least 50% of the time is "Failing as a DM". Sounds a lot like shutting down other playstyles to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a dungeon that Meta-games

1- I was thinking that it might be limited to being unable to change the current floor, but can change a bit of it's layout over a long rest. It requires a longer time to fully change its layout. 2- sight (Darkvision) and hearing. No truesight, so you could be invisible and be fine. You might...

D&D 5E (2014) Next up is Fighter, what do you want from UA?

Another one to look at, I have heard that Adventures in Middle Earth has a non-magical Bard. I have seriously considered picking the book up just for the player options I have heard are in it.

D&D 5E (2014) Long or short rests? What is better?

Rests are popping up quite a lot lately on here. In my own threads on the matter, I am changing long rest classes to get a good number of abilities back on a short rest, but still have some to recharge on a long. It is quite similar to 4Es system of encounter and dailies, which some people seem...

D&D 5E (2014) My tweak to make (Champion) Fighters decent

+1 to this, I certainly want my players to feel more like they are living in my world than they are playing a game. I can see ambushing them every now and then, if they choose to bed down for the night in a place known for being unsafe, but I wouldn't dream of doing it even once because they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a dungeon that Meta-games

Not sure what they would be able to do to stop it, unless they spent all hours within the dungeon under a Greater Invisibility spell. but then it would probably just figure something magical is happening, and have a floor full of anti-magic fields.

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a dungeon that Meta-games

By "Meta-game" I mean a few key things that are usually considered metagaming. Planning ahead based on the players powers, attacking specific characters first, without any obvious sign of who they are (How do you tell the difference between the Paladin and Cleric? The dungeon has seen the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Community Domain for 5e?

Does not exist in 5E yet, but I hear conversions are pretty easy in most cases. I don't own whatever book it might be, but someone else might be able to help out on that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a dungeon that Meta-games

Warning: I know of at least one user on here who's head might explode if you read this. It is about Meta-gaming, so consider yourself warned. I had an idea a couple days ago, and decided to post it here now that I have my thoughts straight. Has anyone seen a Living Dungeon? It is sentient, it...

    D&D 5E (2014) A few questions regarding sun blades

Sunblade specifies that it acts as a longsword, but has the Finesse property while the blade is active. It is a special case.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Warlock Patrons be able to revoke a Warlock's powers if the Patron is displeased?

Oooh, nasty! I would hate to be in a debt when I didn't know what the payment would be. What kind of power was your player asking for that he needed so desperately?

D&D 5E (2014) Should Warlock Patrons be able to revoke a Warlock's powers if the Patron is displeased?

As others have said, it is all up to the story you want to tell. Sometimes the deal is a deal, the Warlock has the power they bargained for, and the Patron has whatever they got out of the pact. Other times, the Warlock is bound to serve the patron, and moving away from that is either a bad...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swashbuckler

I had one player who made an Orc Lady-Knight. Swashbuckler+Champion, expertise in performance and a code of honor like the Knights of old stories (Since that is what made her decide to be a knight). Lady Magdalene was "adopted" by the noble family who her tribe was paid to protect. The adoption...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swashbuckler

Nice. Pretty much all of the Martial classes work well for a Pit fighter background, depending on the kind of pit fighter you are making. The guy who eats damage like cake, or the guy who throws sand into his foes eyes? The one who refuses all blades, preferring instead to feel bone crunch under...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swashbuckler

Starting at 1st level, I wouldn't change a whole lot. I might play a little carefully, since base Rogue doesn't handle melee as well as Swashbuckler. Other than that, it would pretty much go how I had it above, unless a story opportunity presents itself for you to go Warlock early. Maybe a...
