Quietly Back to the Past (in spirit)?

According to a recent WotC quote, Ravenloft was designed with at least some of 4e's strategy in mind, so I don't think you're using a very good example here. I think people are making too much of the whole "Points of Light" thing. If you think about it, the description we have for that implied...

Core Classes: More magic or more abilities?

While I personally would prefer less magic use in classes, D&D has always had 50% or more of its core classes as spellcasters. oD&D had two of the three classes able to cast spells. bD&D has 50% of the classes able to cast spells. 1st and 2nd edition AD&D both had a majority of its classes...

What's going to happen to druids?

Perhaps the druid is headed back to its role in the Rules Cyclopedia, where it was essentially a prestige class. I'd rather it not happen, but who knows? Personally, I'd rather have the warlord or whatever other new classes they're going to add in pushed back into the PHB 2 and let us have the...

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

If there's a focus on encounters reacting to the PCs, I'm curious as to how that effects the "per encounter" focus on abilities. What makes an encounter? If the PCs wipe out all the monsters in room 1 but make enough noise to draw the attention of the monsters in room 2, who then show up 2...

Why Put magic Items in The PHB?

It could be consolidation of information. In the 3rd edition games I run, I usually bring the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual to the session. The Player's Handbook has almost all the rules I need for the game; if there's a rule that gets looked up, it's probably in...

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

I like random ability scores and random hit points, as long as there are safeties to keept players from being stuck with a result that will make them unhappy (such as a 1 on hit point rolls or all 3s for ability scores). Rolling for ability scores is a fun part of character creation; you get to...

D&D 4E 4E Core Rulebooks- how can the layout organization be improved?

I'd personally like to see the Monster Manual laid out like the 2nd edition Monstrous Manual, with one monster per page with some actual ecology notes to go along with the stats.

    Skills?

Here's my problem with the Saga edition style of skills: I have a character who in his backstory was involved in a horrible shipwreck at sea. He's spent over 100 years (he's an elf) avoiding ships and water. The very thought of being in the water used to make him break out in a cold sweat, even...

    The Planes

Just speculation on my part, but I'm betting the DM's Guide will have a section on cosmology with the Great Wheel being an example but not necessarily core. I'm only basing this assumption on the fact that the two big settings, the Forgotten Realms and Eberron, use unique cosmologies.

Does Wizards want Greyhawk to fail?

Even then, WotC could very easily have axed Greyhawk entirely, or at least not released the Expedition book, making no mention of the setting outside of what was in the core books. The fact that WotC still released the Expedition adventure tells me they were/are honestly evaluating it as a...

Were you a 3.x hater when it was announced and are glad you made the switch?

I hated the concept of 3e. I thought 2nd edition was the best the game could get. When 3e got previewed in Dragon Magazine, I was intrigued because a lot of the rules changes mirrored house rules I had already been working with. I ordered the Player's Handbook, and stopped hating it immediately...

What do you plan on doing for your last 3.x campaign?

I think the changeover in my game, if I do indeed change over, will go very much like the changeover from 3 to 3.5. Essentially, we spend a session rebuilding the PCs and explaining rule changes. Any inconsistencies are either retconned or houseruled away, and the game goes on as normal.

Does Wizards want Greyhawk to fail?

Greyhawk was already dead when WotC took over. If they wanted it to fail, they wouldn't have revived it in 2nd edition, wouldn't have made it the core setting of 3rd edition, wouldn't have set up Living Greyhawk, and wouldn't have published Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk. If WotC wanted...

One Rouse-attributed quote that should die now

Unless someone can provide exact quotes and not just remembrances of what might have been said, Scott and WotC in general get the benefit of doubt from me. Memory is a funny thing that sometimes tells you what you want to hear, not what you heard.

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

The tone of the article, intentionally or not (probably intentionally) is basically saying, "look how badass 4e dragons will be!" And, considering that dragons have invariably increased in power with every new edition, the article certainly seems to imply the trend will continue. Ancient red...

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

This preview leaves me cold. The more insanely powerful dragons get, the less useful they are in my games.

*POLL* Do You Feel That Greyhawk is a Dead Campaign Officially?

I don't know what the big deal with setting support is, anyway. My homebrew has never had any supplements published for it, but it's definitely not dead, as the setting changes every week. When I ran published setting like the Forgotten Realms, slavishly following the campaign's supporting...

D&D 4E 4E tidbits from WotC blogs (Updated:David Noonan on Social Interactions)

That would be fine for me, as I've already house-ruled those things into my 3rd edition game. When 3e came out, a lot of my 2e house rules became core. Hopefully, the same thing will happen with 4e for me.

"Some" traditional classes to get the axe - Which ones do you reckon?

On WotC's web page, which is down right now. I think it's under the Dragon tab on the left.

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Presentation videos

The digital initiative will not be for me. One of the main reasons I don't play MMORPGs is because I don't want to pay a subscription fee for a game I already own. So the DI is out for me. As long as the game doesn't rely on it, though (i.e., as long as all the content needed to play is in the...
