Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

Wow...there's an awful lot of debate here about something that isn't even part of the core game. The druid looks cool, though.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

Common sense to me would be that the poison duration gets reset to 10 for each subsequent bite. Of course, rules don't always mesh with my definition of common sense, but I think that would be the easiest way to run it in combat.

    Overshadowed by Elminster?

The couple of times I ran a Realms game, Elminster came off almost as a comedic figure. Unless a given adventure was really a world-threatening situation, he seemed largely out of touch with the events of the world. He used his magic frivolously, focusing more on flashy effects than deadly...

Mary Sue- Not sure I understand

The sex thing isn't limited to Elminster. That's just how Greenwood writes. One of his novels mentions Mirt the Moneylender's adopted daughter hoping to one day become his lover. You can set an egg timer on most characters in Greenwood's novels losing their clothing. That's not an Elminster...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Chronicles setting: what does it offer?

I think there are a few things to keep Golarion and similar setting from running into the pitfalls that the Realms did. For one, there's consistency in the Paizo staff. One of the problems that the Realms had in TSR's days was that there were a lot of different people working on novels and...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Chronicles setting: what does it offer?

Considering the vast amount of territory and different themes covered in the Pathfinder campaign setting, maybe it would be better for you to explain what you are looking for in a setting. Golarion ranges from traditional D&D realms to Egyptian, Arabian, and Asian-style nations to places...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Chronicles setting: what does it offer?

It's not unimportant. However, in terms of a hook, which is what it seems like you're looking for, the Golarion setting would fit into the "generic D&D" category, whatever that is. If you want to look at just the contents of the setting and ignore the quality, you're missing a huge part of the...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Chronicles setting: what does it offer?

I would think that being well-written and consistent would be enough for a setting. If you're looking for a single hook to define the setting, there isn't one. Golarion offers what Greyhawk, Mystara, and the Forgotten Realms do, but without the large amount of mediocre or poor supplements that...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Setting as Selling Point?

Golarion is to the Pathfinder RPG what Greyhawk was to 3rd edition D&D: an implied setting but nothing more. (The difference being that Golarion, unlike Greyhawk, is actually getting some product The core books have traces of Golarion in it, such as the gods and a few concepts that originated in...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

More hit points (in addition to the larger hit die, you can now get extra hit points through a favored class bonus), better spell progression, and certain bardic performances that directly harm enemies in some way (such as the dirge of doom mentioned in the blog). Bards aren't going to replace...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

I'm not really interested in bards much anyway, but I think the thing that makes this preview appealing to me is that bards seem more capable of standing on their own and doing some things themselves in a fight, rather than just being there to provide buffs to the rest of the party. They won't...

How long do you spend preparing a game?

For a recent one-shot in my 3.5 game, my prep time consisted of drawing three cards from Green Ronin's Deck of Many Things, using the results as a starting point for an adventure, and putting about fifteen minutes of thought into the game before diving in. It turned out to be a lot of fun. Most...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo sets price of Pathfinder RPG PDF at $9.99!!!!!

I don't know of too many placed where you can print out a bound copy of a 576-page rulebook in color for that cheap. Add in the high quality of Paizo's books and I think it's worth buying a physical copy of the rules. As to local gaming shops, if they really want to see PDFs as a threat, then...

WotC 4E D&D bloat (was Forked Thread: Pathfinder (PFRPG) bloat)

I think the term "bloat" as used here is one of those subjective terms that can't really be defined outside of personal preference. 1st edition was considered bloated when it had a dozen rulebooks. 2nd edition was arguably the most bloated of systems because not only did it have a ton of...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

Several Pathfinder classes seem to be built to allow for more flexibility down the road for powers - I'm thinking the bard's performance, the barbarian's rage, and the paladin's lay on hands/smite as examples. That seems to me to be a good way of slipping in alternate class features down the...

When and why were the factions driven out of Sigil?

There's probably a healthy balance that should have been struck. While TSR's flavor was great, they tended to wreck their settings way too often. For example, Dark Sun didn't make it out of its first novel series without the world being torn apart. Big events like that should probably have been...

    AD&D is not "rules light"

There are several situations in AD&D where merely ignoring the rules would cause trouble, though. Take out the punching/grappling/overbearing system, for example, and you need another way of figuring out what happens when someone fights unarmed. Take out instant death effects and you're tossing...

    D&D3 minus some rules

Any grappling situations can be resolved through a single attack roll or opposed attack roll. Creatures with improved grab automatically grapple their opponent on either a critical hit or if they hit by 5 or more on their attack roll, whichever is preferred. One of the following options: 1)...

    AD&D is not "rules light"

I find it odd that a game with as much 3rd party support as 3e, let alone the big book o' house rules that is Unearthed Arcana, gets lambasted as being impossible to modify. I especially think it's odd that there's suddenly a perception that your new house rule has to be completely unbreakable...

    Necromancer Games-update by Orcus

See, I don't think you can ascribe one motivation to WotC in regards to the GSL. The whole thing smacks of something that was a great idea until someone on the business end got involved. If WotC wanted to cut 3rd party support, they could have just not had a system license at all. If they wanted...
