D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

I was just thinking, though, that resilience dex with a 16 dex at the end would ultimately give you +9 to dex saving throws for a guy in heavy armor. That's kind of interesting, counter intuitive to the norm of the hulking guy with a greatsword, and would reinforce the "master swordsman" concept...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

I suppose this came from the desire to create a "master swordsman" sort of build, and it seems the only optimized way to do this is the greatsword/heavy armor battlemaster, since light armor will provide too little AC early in the career and having a tertiary CON will leave you with only 8...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

I would get the alert feat on top of having a final dex of 14, but that would leave me with wis 10, which in my experience might also be low enough to be terrible.

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Alright, I guess let me rephrase: From an optimization standpoint, regardless of "character concept", is playing a fighter with 16 STR/16 CON/14 DEX starting off stupid? Just to clarify further, feats are allowed, which is how I derive these starting numbers with a variant human, and the...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Now you're just putting words in my mouth. You can extrapolate whatever meaning you want from what I'm saying, except when I'm telling you exactly what I mean. I never said that anything was beneath my character just because I don't want to invest stats in being good at it. That's why d and d is...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Where did I say that ranged attacker is useless? All I said was that the caster and ranged attacker will pluck fliers out of the sky. Let me rephrase: For MELEE, there just seems to be strength, heavy armor, and great weapon fighting if we're talking about effectiveness and DPS. Ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

I'm just not sure if a 14 in dex vs wisdom is really cost effective. There are many more skills that rely on wis than dex, and just getting +2 to init, ranged attacks, saves, and dex skills isn't that great. If I'm wearing heavy armor anyway, I have disadvantage on stealth so +2 means nothing...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Thats exactly what I mean. Medium armor master is a waste of a feat, and therefore the small bonuses from dex as 14 are far outweighed by having, say, 14 wis if only for the saves and the skill proficiencies.

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Well, I'm a bit of a min/maxer and for that reason I pose the question because I was pondering this issue myself. The conclusion I came to is that the best you can do is dump cha, so that'll leave you with 15/14/14/10/10/8 as your starting array with point buy. With variant human, 15 becomes 16...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Is playing a fighter with STR as a primary stat and DEX as a secondary stupid? I see little benefit to having DEX even as a tertiary stat. In heavy armor, you get no bonus to AC, but you do get bonus to initiative. You do get better dex based saves, which is a major category against usually...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

I can agree with anyone that says champions are boring, because for people who want all the bells and whistles and complication BUILT IN to their class' mechanics, the champion doesn't have that. I can agree with anyone that says champions are simple, because they just goddam are. All of their...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

You sure can. We're discussing the fighter archetypes from a min/max point of view, but the great thing about 5th edition is that you can totally have fun both mechanically and roleplaying even if you don't have a numerically superior specimen.

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

By all means, those who prefer battlemaster over champion, you're more than welcome to and have fun with that. I currently play a champion and a battlemaster in two separate games, champion level 6 and battlemaster level 11, so I speak from experience. Yes, its true, with the champion in combat...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

Well, that's the rub. You can make "I hit it" as fun and imaginative or as boring and repetitive as you want. If Netflix showed you only 6 movies and then told you to sign in next week, would you ever subscribe? In this sense "on demand" means you don't run out of it, not turning it on...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

Champions are as boring or exciting as you make them. Battlemaster can only add AC during movement, so you don't really get any benefit other than on one move through hostile territory. The "on demand" portion of your+to hit or damage is literally 6 times max. Champion has crit truly on demand...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

Champions are the no nonsense, zero maintenance, tough SOBs that dish out the pain and take it just as well. At least, on the surface. The reality is that the champion requires feats to really shine. The reason being is that his main advantage, crits, only becomes a worthy choice if you play...

D&D 5E (2014) Barbarians: Why Rage per Day?

While I commend the effort to switch things up, the one rage/short rest I think is flawed because it essentially makes the barbarian on par with a fighter in terms of action economy, ergo action surge. The fighter, however, has many more features going for it other than action surge to make him...

D&D 5E (2014) Barbarians: Why Rage per Day?

Here's how I feel about it: 1. Raging per round/being able to turn it on or off from round to round feels more like a super saiyan transformation than someone going into a rage, the former being much more controlled and obviously permanent than the latter. 2. I like the way they have it done...

D&D 5E (2014) I just don't see why they even bothered with the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.

The book is largely underwhelming. Aside from a handful of racial subtypes, some class archetype alternatives, and backgrounds that are actually worse than the original ones in the PHB, there isn't much in there. Lots of flavor text about a realm I personally don't care about since whether I...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

There is no such thing as "wasting" crits because they are an infinite resource and therefore by definition cannot be wasted. You are just as likely to score a critical hit on an enemy that could use massive damage as on an enemy that's almost dead, so even from your point of view, you can't...
