[Skills] Solutions to the oblivious rogue problem

I think it needs to be read in conjunction with the advice to DMs that an easy, stress-free action requires no roll for success. If he has to roll for some reason, the typical person might fail the 'trivial' DC 50% of the time... but the DM is advised not to require a roll for those actions in...

[Skills] Solutions to the oblivious rogue problem

An alternative way to read the proposed system: Skill checks are 1d20 + ability mod. When using a trained skill, you are considered to have an ability score of 20. -Hyp.

[Skills] Solutions to the oblivious rogue problem

I think there are a couple of questions that should be answered before a Skills mechanic is considered, and then a Skills mechanic should be judged on whether it gives the correct answers to those questions. I'm not saying what I think the answers should be; rather, I'm saying that whoever's...

    Introduction to villains and clues

Heh. Amusingly, I was going to post "In our Star Wars campaign, the GM used cutscenes to great effect" :) It meant that the players-as-audience had some more detail and foreshadowing to work with than the characters-as-participants did, but the GM never gave away too much. It just meant that...

Rogue Idea: Trading Sneak Attack Damage for Opportunities

I believe his intention is that the Rogue gets nothing at even-numbered levels. +2d6 at 3rd is a replacement for the current system of +1d6 at 2nd and +1d6 at 3rd. So the progression, for a Rogue who took the +2d6 option every time, would be: 1st: +1d6 2nd: +1d6 3rd: +3d6 4th: +3d6 5th: +5d6...

Yeah, but I can dream ;) -Hyp.

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

Maybe that's why I don't see the problem - I have no trouble with abstract hit points letting someone survive a fireball, so I don't feel the pressure to define fireball damage as automatic wound points. To be fair, 'wound points' wouldn't actually be my choice for modeling consequential...

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

Sure, but a distinction between hit-point-damage-causing-mechanical-penalty and hit-point-damage-without-mechanical-penalty doesn't preclude any particular existing interpretation of hit-point-damage-without-mechanical-penalty. At the moment, Lanefan's PC can take damage resulting in a twisted...

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

ainatan above you doesn't appear to be arguing that, and I think ainatan's position is similar to mine: I don't mind someone being on maximum hit points without all evidence of physical damage they previously sustained (along with lost hit points) having vanished. If I lost ten hit points...

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

Isn't there a difference between "Hit points are a combination of many things, one of those being actual damage" and "Each hit point is a combination of many things, one of those being actual damage"? If I have a handful of tokens, which can be spent on a combination of items including food...

    The silver standard?

I vote for Gygaxian Greyhawk currency. One iron drab. Five drabs make a brass bit. Ten bits make a bronze zee. Five zees make a copper common. Four commons make a silver noble. Five nobles make an electrum lucky. Ten luckies make a gold orb. One orb and one lucky make a platinum plate - the...

    Everybody has Spring Attack

Old School Hack uses a similar concept, though the rounds have 7 phases. And like your proposal, Ranged (phase 2) happens before Movement (phase 4), which happens before Melee (phase 5). -Hyp.

    pogre's brief playtest remarks

In round two, I read it as "For my action, I smack you with my mace... and as part of my action, the Hammer moves 20 feet and attacks". It's not entirely clear, but that's the reading that fits best for me. -Hyp.

    pogre's brief playtest remarks

How did you interpret "as part of your action"? The way I read it, after the round you cast it, the Hammer gets one free whack each round for the next ten rounds, while you're busy doing other stuff. If you played it as consuming your entire action each round, I'd agree it feels weak. If it...

Owl Hoot Trail: spaghetti western + fantasy = awesome. Come playtest!

DASH is my favourite of that set, but I still prefer SNAP - most of the others feel like they apply to physical quickness, but the stat covers reaction time as well as agility and mobility, and I think SNAP caters to both better than the other options. -Hyp.
