What are you reading in 2024?

We might read very different forms of fantasy, but I've not seen the kind of books A Song of Ice and Fire are to be the dominant type of fantasy for at least a decade. (And even then it was more Abercombe/Lynch rather than GRRM.) And sure, Brandon Sanderson broke some kind of Kickstarter...

What are you reading in 2024?

For Kobo devices, I really recommend getting the KoboTouchExtended Calibre plugin. It converts epub to a version (kepub) optimized for Kobo devices when you transfer the files. It's a lot of difference in speed for font size changes and a slight speed increse for page turning. But yeah. Kobo...

Ed Greenwood retweets homophobic Indiegogo campaign, is also Senior Editor on project

A lot of the comicsgate people speak grognard, and if you're not clued in to what they're doing and is all about, it can be hard to spot as an outsider. Ryan Tyler Palmer — who's pretty involved in the War Campaign spinoff that thinks CG is "weak on the culture war" — wrote a tweet about...

    A neotrad TTRPG design manifesto

As TH defined it, it just signifies a merger between simulationist and story-games with a focus on the characters and motivations — some closer to one than the other. And in Alien, the way the secret android works where the rules switch on discovery is in this vein, at least for me. It's a...

    A neotrad TTRPG design manifesto

Neo-trad was coined in 2010, when Free League was designing Svavelvinter and the definition was something like "late 80s, early 90s RPG design that acknowledges that indie games have some pretty good ideas worth stealing." Some of Thomas examples were The One Ring, Gumshoe, and Cortex Plus —...

    Spoilers Rebel Moon-my spoiler review

Which is also why when I talk about worst movies, it will not be Plan 9 or the Room or even Batman & Robin (although you can make an argument there but I will not agree). It's going to be movies made by people who should know better and had the chance to make something and then didn't. And if a...

    Spoilers Rebel Moon-my spoiler review

There's not really enough to hang on to any other emotion than disappointment. I wish it had been worse, at least that would elicit some feelings about it. Crap as he might be, Uwe Boll at least has some creative intent, I can find none of that here. (Image not fair to Street Fighter.)

What do you want in a shapeshifting class?

For unlimited shapes, the extra hitpoints need to go of course — or at least be offset to spendable resource. So let's use WildShape for that, and I think that could also be a thing you use to get direforms or have to spend for creatures with breath weapons and similar. Unlimited regular beast...

What do you want in a shapeshifting class?

As a shapechanger, I want the shapechanging to be the focus and not just a cool effect once in a while. To be able to go from one form to the next fluidly within the same fight or chasing after someone without going "sorry, I can only do this twice a day."

    Star Wars Rewatch

They really should have avoided the accents for the Gungans, tightened up the pod race, and taking things a tad more seriously, then it would have been a lot better in hindsight. It's one of the rare Star Wars movies with an actual plot and not just "random things happen in a sequence". And...

    Show me your Shelfie!

@Mage of Spellford Neat collection, makes me wish even more that I hadn't taken that RPG sabbatical during the 90s and early 00s.

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

And they insists on going "this is what we meant to do al along! All the rest was just a test/request for feedback/never meant to be sent out!" after getting caught and trying again with another OGL that was also terrible but more sneaky about it. The CC came when too many mainstream news...

WotC Hasbro's CEO Reports OGL-Related D&D Beyond Cancellations Had Minimal Impact

Not only what @doctorbadwolf said above, but also since then Paizo's workers unionized and the company didn't fight it. That goes quite a bit more than simply going "sorry" and continue as usual.

Babylon 5, new series, new rpg?

Asmodee moved the RPGs from FFG to Edge Studio. Think they rehired some of the people there and they still make rpgs, just unlucky that the pandemic hit and made it take a lot longer than they had anticipated to get things up and running.

    Tell Me About Cortex Prime

Yeah, the five Spotlight books that remains from the kickstarter have sadly not had the highest of priorities but hopefully we'll get at least one soonish (November is the latest for the first volume but I'm not holding my breath). Content from the kickstarter: Spotlight Volume One Miriam...

D&D General Would It Matter To You if D&D Books Were Illustrated by AI Instead of Humans?

That do you base that on? What I've seen of the AI art companies are that they're started by people who want to be good at art but quit on day two because no noticeable skill change*. The machine learning software analyses what's popular in the image set, but it has no compositional weighting...

    Artworks in an RPG

I'm sorry but Midjourney landscapes are just as easily identifiable as Poser 3 art were in the late 90s.

    Million Dollar TTRPG Kickstarter Club

With Free League, one can make the argument that the kickstarters are there to make them afford the stretchgoals rather than the game — because I think the low goal are what they need to pay a small initial print run.
