    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

People will get angry if they use D&D 2014, and people will get angry if they use D&D 2024, and other people will get angry if they use Daggerheart. So the best thing they could do what they want because some portion of the fanbase will get upset anyway. They need a shake-up.

100% agreed about the pace. But I also wonder if they've learned some from their own playtest and how WotC do theirs — it's better to have things be playtested for a while rather than a month or two before print. Especially if it has a whole new domain. So this is playtest for a book that comes...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Oh yes. I read the game and told people "this is what we should have played in 2016 rather than the highly modified Dungeon World!" (We had to add social things from Urban Shadows and fix the dungeon parts of the playbooks — we don't do dungeon crawls.) Darrington Press just have the worst...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Well no, he did a few play tests of DH and a Deadlands miniseries too, and occasionally played in a parthfinder oneshot. Most of the other things he's talked about playing was in collage, at least as far as campaign goes. Otherwise it's bite-sized samples that will not change how he play a game...

    VTT/online-play Etiquette and Horror Stories

"Insists on rolling physical dice when everyone else rolls in the VTT" This jsut shows how different tables are. We roll physical dice with VTT rolls optional. Why? Dice are more fun.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

If I ran 450 four hour long sessions of D&D (plus how many years before that), and then sometimes did 5 pbta/fitd sessions in total, I'd too probably default to D&D mindset. The only way to break it is by playing other things and getting things wrong — habits don't change right away. (I'm the...

Would also use a custom rule that getting a scar is automatic and not up to a dice roll when you pick the fall unconscious death move — possibly with an exception if you strike a bad deal with whatever entity is on the other side. (I was certain automatic scar was in Age of Umbra already but...

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

For even further into the narrative than those there's the Cortex Prime game Tales of Xadia (based on the Dragon Prince cartoon). It's also really good.

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

If you can find them, the Atomic Robo and Young Centurions are IMO the best books to explain the variants of the game (Core and Accelerated) . They do come with settings though and I think this helps when talking about the rules.

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

Ivan's title according to the DH book was "HEAD OF DARRINGTON PRESS". They've hired two people — none for that position — and no-one else has left. This is quite different than amount of people that's impacted whenever something happens at WotC.

It's a heroic fantasy game at the core so you can't oneshot anyone. They still had two people make death moves in session two and people still picked the gambling option after finding out they leave the miniseries if they die. I don't see the "more deadly" as being false advertising.

Coming from literature, grimdark characters survive almost everything. They just get mangled and lose people to collateral. The characters themselves are not that different than AoU imo. Other grimdark ttrpgs? Sure. But then again, I feel those has so much meatgrinder in them that nothing...

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

Seems to make sense to leave now. If he was staying longer, he'd probably not have time to run Hunters Ent on the side. Folding it into Darrington was probably not an option due to then losing control over it.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I ran a Dungeon World for 45 sessions — so I think you can easily run Daggerheart for 70-80. But that's half the length of their current campaigns anyway, so I agree. C4 and afterwards will probably be shorter and a bit more focused as a result.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

In the launch video, Spenser Starke says they started developing the game four years ago, it's not just a thing they pulled together after the OGL debacle in 2023. They announced it yes, but it had already been in going through internal playtest at that time. This makes DH just as old or...

Matt described a 5e firbolg a bit imprecise so Liam, I think, assumed they looked like cows. And then they and the fan art just ran with that so that's how firbolgs look in the non-WotC CR books.
