Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Also: Pathfinder, much of the OSR games, Beyond the Wall, D20, Tales of the Valiant, all of those are Dungeons & Dragons. Possibly even X Without Number games too. I really like some of the games but they're still D&D.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Yeah, I never considered that one. Think I've settled with going back etymologically to the root and use Aroughcoune.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

While the modifiers in Daggerheart are often small enough that the roll beads-modifiers with dice isn't going to be needed, my maths deficient brain is definitively using that for 5e. I'm terribly slow with head maths and feel bad for people needing to slow down and wait while I add things up.

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

One can also argue that 4e's X encounter and Y daily powers prepared are also one of the inspirations behind the vault and the five active domain card limit.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I don't have any art for it so haven't turned it into card like the Aroughcoune (raccoon) ancestry. TOILBORNE Being part of a toilborne community means you're from a society that works the soil, be it farmers or surface miners. Calloused Hands: Once per session, you can spend Hope to regain...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

The hope/fear don't have to have special narration — the main thing is that they hand out a meta currency, the rest can be flavour if nothing else comes to mind. And I do think Daggerheart is better at explaining the rules than BitD is.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

As someone who started out RPGs with playing those ducks — art was a bit more Disney back then — I approve! It will need to be playtested and all that, but this is the raccoon card. (Placeholder sketch until I draw it proper. )

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

It's one of the system among the pitches for next game to play, hopefully that gives enough time for some VTT support to show up. But I did already make a raccoon ancestry.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

ExU is tied into the main campaigns in a way and come with their own fans of the guest DM. Had it just been the system, then the oneshots and sponsored contents should have had a lot more viewers. I think the main things is the length and the cast but for quite a few then sure, 5e is also the...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Other explanations are that they're not the main campaign with the core cast, so the shorter format will not hit the same kind of "want to see these characters grow over two+ years" kick nor the "I'm here for these people" due to the guests (which is a bit rude but it seems a lot of people tune...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

And if we're going on personal anecdotes as evidence, Critical Role do not succeed on that. The moment they're high enough in levels that a fight takes more than three hours then it's a chore to watch and everything just stops. And I think Brennan's argument was "we're improv actors, we know...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Oh yes, and I think a lot hinges on the one running/teaching it, but also if it's a game people want to learn. My friend's is very much just that of my friend and their circumstances. (I probably have ADHD but never got an assessment myself and I'm very Kombucha GIF about too much crunch in...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I do not no, so thank you for this context. While the mechanics are different, I think the flaws of both systems with "there's no hard rules about this, just RP" are in the same place (ie outside of combat) to the same degree. Except that Daggerheart has better defined "how to GM this" than 5e...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

The SRD for the game didn't skim on the inclusion of material bit. And I didn't see any real issues with the Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL) for third-party material either, so really good on them.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I really don't see why this should be an issue with this game and not with D&D.

Another thing to consider is how the library handles compensations. I can't talk about how it is elsewhere but in Sweden each time someone checks out a book, a small monetary compensation is reserved to the authors and illustrators and then paid out yearly. Without the lender limits and...
