    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

It's actually any cleric with... a few conditions. :p Access to Green-Flame Blade (thanks to the Magic Initiate feat) and the additional damage feature at level 8 and 14 (which means Life, Nature, Tempest, Trickery and War domains). The numbers are as follow : Weapon : 1d8+melee modifier (or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

From a pure DPR point of view, any Cleric with Green-Flame Blade and Spiritual Weapon actually outdamages an Eldritch Knight in melee combat at pretty much any level. At high level, you can dish 6d8+melee modifier AND another 4d8+wisdom modifier with a Bonus Action (Spiritual Weapon) to your...

D&D 5E (2014) Which feats would you change, why would you change them & how would you change them?

Savage attacker : melee weapon damage dice can now explode if they roll max damage. GWM and SS : I'm thinking of simply replacing the -5/+10 by +1 Str / Dex. It makes the feat less spiky and put two-handed weapons and ranged weapons in line with two-weapon fighting and finesse weapons.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are Aura's burdensome?

It is indeed a problem when players are not completely dumb, as it wrecks bounded accuracy. In my group there is a paladin, a rogue, a ranger and a barbarian. As you've probably noticed, they're almost all melee (some can fight at range but they prefer melee). Most of them have a way to negate...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Psionics and Mystics Take Two

Is no one else bothered by Psionic Investigation ? I thought they would change it from the first playtest, but it remained the same... It basically ruins any kind of investigation scenario since pretty much anything is an "object". All you have to do is touch something on the crime scene and...

    Roll20 Updates To The D&D 5E SRD

Create your own game, select the "journal" tab and click "add : character". The character sheet needs some improvements though, because right now it's not as good as the community-made one. But it seems to me that they're not finished with it, so I'll hold on my critics for now !

    What 5e got wrong

That's a great idea and a good way to solve attributes discrepancies imo. Now people have a reason not to dump Intelligence or Charisma, even if it's still not enough for my taste. Regarding in-combat healing, I can only agree with Jester Canuck. The Dark Sun party I'm DMing doesn't have a...

D&D 5E (2014) So which adventures/campaigns have you played so far?

As a DM : I've been running a Dark Sun campaign from level 1 to 10 (level 11 will be the last) following the 2nd edition scenarios "Freedom" and "Road to Urik" (very little conversion work to do here, surprisingly) and expanding them with homebrewed scenarios which ended with the death of King...

    What 5e got wrong

PoE did things really well for a video game, but I agree that it's a bit too complicated for a real-life RPG. I think what 5th edition designers should have done, is give us an alternate attribute system in the DMG. They tried to do something like this, with the introduction of the Sanity and...

    Did I do something wrong?

This. After reading the OP, it was the first thing that came to my mind. How old are the people you're playing with and, more importantly, how long have they been playing RPGs ? Immaturity is a real problem in roleplaying games. I realised that recently when I DMed a sandbox-type Dark Sun...

D&D 5E (2014) What is your preferred level of play?

In 5th it's been 3 to 11 for me. Level 3 gets you some really cool stuff and level 11 feels like a good one to end a campaign. Fighters get a 3rd attack which finally makes them better than everyone else at their job, casters get level 6 spells which, to me, epitomise the ultimate powers of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Treasure Room

Lots of good ideas, thanks ! I'll probably use all of them, though I think I'll pass on the spoons lol... And I really like the Cave of Wonders thing, but I'll probably do if differently. I was worried that they might get out with tons and tons of gold and magic items, so I'll just ask them to...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Lingering Injuries

I use them when PCs fall to 0hp and I have mixed feelings about them. So far my PCs have received mostly internal injuries, minor scars and one PC lost an eye. I think lingering injuries give characters some personality but players usually don't like when something bad happens to their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Treasure Room

Hi, My PCs are currently lvl 9 in a Dark Sun campaign that's meant to end around lvl 11. They're about to reach the Treasure Room of King Kalak, a BBEG that built a giant ziggurat in the middle of his city to help him become a true dragon (the equivalent of a God in Dark Sun) but who died...

D&D 5E (2014) Revising a few feats for balance in my home game - Thoughts?

I don't disagree with you, but dual wielders can't use this part of the feat. Only heavy weapon users can perform the -5/+10 action.

    Messing with Ability Scores

Good morning fellow DMs, I'm not satisfied with the current division of ability scores and their in-game balance : some ability scores are too important, some others are virtually useless *gamewise* (I don't want roleplay to be the balancing factor). I wanted to tweak them a little bit for an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Applying Poison?

Monsters (like assassins and spiders) are irrelevant I think. They've been designed with infinite poison for simplicity's sake and because they're not supposed to last more than 3 rounds. In my not so humble opinion, the Basic poison from the Player's Handbook should also be ignored. It was...
