    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Could we at least ask the designers to include a sidebar with the option for more "accurate" measurements? I know that sounds like a bit of a cop-out, but it's pretty clear that this is a pretty divisive issue. A bit of official acknowledgment would go a long, long way.

D&D 4E Going/Not Going to 4E which edition did you start with?

Started with Moldvay (and, like Wormwood, still consider that to be the gold standard) and played 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5... and yes, I'm going to 4e.

    D&D 4E Nicolas Logue on 4e

This was posted in the Paizo 4e forum. I figure that most people who read this forum already know who Logue is, but for those who don't, he's one of the best new adventure authors to come around in a while. He's written the Chimes at Midnight trilogy in Dungeon, the Eyes of the Lich Queen...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Again, space is not amorphous. If the DM says "you see an orc 30' away, standing over the corpse of one of the soldiers you were traveling with," he's not going to position the orc ala illustration #2. He's going to position it as illustration #1 or a very modified illustration #2, with four...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Sigh... Yes, if I were playing the wizard, I'd prefer to set the minis on the grid like in the second diagram, because the second diagram is a larger physical space. This is disappointing. I'm arguing with someone I agree with fundamentally. Ainatan, I agree with you- I don't like the...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

I knew somebody would bring that up :) Yes, you're absolutely right. But there is a difference between a mathematical constant of the universe (c) and a D&D character. You can be confident that one won't change as of tomorrow. The other might be in the trash can within an hour or two.

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

I'm pretty sure my math is correct- it's my presentation that probably needs some help. Let me rephrase. Take the first picture. The wizard and the monster are orthogonally 30 feet apart. If you assume that the path is the "hypotenuse" of a room, connecting opposite edges, then each side of...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

No, they are not 30 feet apart. Judging the distance between two points as a function of how far something can travel is just wacky. You are warping space far more than WotC is. Here's what I mean. Assume both of those encounters are happening in square rooms, with the monster and the wizard...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

You're making an assumption that the rules do not make. The rules are abstracting the distance a character can move, they are not abstracting the distances themselves. Thus, your first illustration is correct in that the monster and the wizard are indeed 30' apart. Your second illustration...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

I'm going to issue a rebuttal not because I like the 1-1-1-1 system anymore than you do (I don't), but because I think play balance isn't really threatened by the change. The key aspect of this change that precludes it from unbalancing the system in ways that powergamers can exploit is that...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Well, this is accurate, but they don't want long movements to take too long to calculate if you have to re-do some of the movement. Personally, I'd do: All movement into a clear square costs 1. The first diagonal movement of any move action costs an extra 1. All other subsequent diagonals in...

    D&D 4E 4e Design and JRR Tolkien

Well, no need for dinner (seriously, I'll punch you in the mouth ;) ), but Rowling did put in a few references that had my wife thinking Dumbledore was gay before the announcement. The two I remember that she cited (and, let me say this again, this was before the gay flap started): * The...

D&D 4E The 4e Mystery Race is going to be...

... well, who really knows for sure? But I've got a couple of guesses. (1) Minotaurs This is my pet guess. What little information we have lines up nicely. Minotaurs have this thing in D&D about being sailors (lining up with the fleet of the mystery race sailing in). They're a popular race...

    D&D 4E 4e Design and JRR Tolkien

With all due respect, no edition of D&D ever printed represents Tolkienesque fantasy. Sure, there are surface similarities (hobbits, rangers, Balors), but once you get to the hearts of each D&D system, everything goes out the window. Mortal wizards? Priests that gain powers from Gods...

    D&D 4E The 4E Magic System

The "spells not scaling" bit worries me a bit. I DO NOT want to see fireball I to IX, each doing different amount of damage. That's one innovation of online games and other RPGs that I'd like to leave out of D&D, thank you very much. That said, there's plenty of ways to not scale a fireball...

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

The arguments being bandied about this thread aren't mutually exclusive. * Paizo DID NOT coin the term Adventure Path or innovate the model of an adventure path. WotC did both with the Adventure Path Adventures which began with Sunless Citadel * Paizo did, however, build on the initial...

So what 3E adventures were worst?

Ya know, the truly tragic part about Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil was the abrupt shift at the 25% mark that sent the whole book into the gutter. Hommlet was wonderfully detailed. Loved it. The Gatehouse was awesome. The players couldn't believe what they were fighting. Really...

DMG to include a "starter town".

Bah, I've always thought Hommlet was a bunch of sentimental, overrated rot compared to Orlane or the Keep, but hey, who asked me? I still enjoyed it back in the day, and I'll enjoy it again, I bet :) And for the life of me, I can't fathom why people don't want examples of towns or dungeons in...

D&D 4E 4e tiefling art vs. previous edition tiefling art?

Just for quick reference, Tieflings with large horns are nothing new. Check out the introduction to the Age of Worms adventure path (written by Paizo, an extremely old-school company): http://paizo.com/image/product/catalog/TSR/TSR82124_500.jpeg ...And this was in 2005.

Game Day mini = Spined Devil

    Quick threory on hit points. Apologize if it has been posted before. Skirmisher hit points: d6/level Triple hp at 1st. 18 + (5 x 3.5) + 12 = 18 + 17 + 12 = 47 Seems to match up, at least.
